As rare coins go, has anyone mentioned the 1916 I halfpenny mule?
This rarity exists because the obverse die for the Indian Quarter Anna was accidentally mixed with the Australian halfpenny die during production at the Calcutta mint in India.
The first of the ten or less known examples was discovered in 1965 in South Australia by Cecil Poole.
Macca's suggests: VG $45,000 - F $100,00 - VF $160.00 and 'unknown in better grade'.
So if you're fortunate to find one in Unc then just imagine...
Les

Pwillow,
I'd suggest trying a different dealer then. I've seen a couple for sale by dealers, I am pretty sure I've seen one in Klaus Fords stock, and I recall seeing one in either Walter or Eric Eigners stock. I also know that Carlo at Essendon Collectables sold one a little while back. If you want an unbiased dealer opinion on your chances at auction for such a coin I'd suggest contacting Peter at Stuart Andersen Coins in Melbourne.

Huh. This one wasn't mentioned in any of the posts in this thread, so I guess you all have one -- or a few -- in your collections? I'll have to keep hunting...ho ho. Best to all ~ Tom (Very newbie...hatched just last night!)

Aussie florins weren't even minted till 1910, so I think that 1909 must be some sort of token? I've never seen a picture of it before, so hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will put us all in the picture. Give us a look at the other side please.

Judging by the thin rim, denticles and field surfaces, that one looks pressure-cast--a token/souvenir as Nancy suggests?

Hi again ~ I thought this pattern was pretty famous. At some point, apparently, a die was indeed made by a person who stole one of the originals from a museum. The "originals" are themselves electrotypes. Here's some more background, including a photo of Fast Eddie's right-facing, uncrowned effigy. http://www.australianstamp.com/coin...1909flor.htm...and here: http://www.triton.vg/F09.htmlEnjoy! Tom

There's a fantastic book out about David Gee called "Heads I Win". Mark Duff from Strand currently has one of Gee's fakes in his store for viewing.

Yep, strange when old threads are resurrected and names pop up. Happens on both this forum and on the Australian forum. Very few seem to be posting on either forum, why is that?

I think Mark instigated a self imposed ban on Social Media when he started the Oz coin forum,Eric still posts occasionally on the Oz. Forum.
I posted in the other Thread, all our Oz note experts seem to have disappeared,i think one was Goatieman and can't think of the other guys names.
