"that would contain a standard weight and purity so people could trade goods for any countries money without worrying about conversion" ----- I kind of believe that this is what the future commerce will be based upon: given constant inflation of conventional 'sovereign' moneyS, some kind of 'gold standard' is inevitable... (just recently Japanese government has decided to include inflationary target of about 2 percent in budget projections - fat cats in parliament and big business have convinced everyone that deflation is the most terrible thing out there, and now they want to make people poorer by giving them impression of getting 'richer', alongside with raising consumption tax, and re-starting shabby nuclear power stations - the country is... going to heck in a hand basket )

The medal is made in China, not Japan. Not struck in Osaka Mint.

tevlon, can you please take a better photo?
I don't like the look of it.
As far as I know, Japan Mint has never struck any silver bullion coins - all of them are commemorative coins and were never mass produced other than the Tokyo Olympic coins.

Really nice medallions, it's interesting how the " Trade dollar" is packaged, encapsulated and then sealed in vinyl similar to the 1/2 oz silver Pandas of China from 1993-98 and the 1 oz. Pandas were also heat sealed and encapsulated in 2004-05. I was very much tempted by the Japanese prefecture 1 oz. series, but no one in the states ever heard of them, much less have ever seen one, so if I ever had sell my bullion in this form I might just only get melt. The designs are attractive, though.

I was about to say these were included in some old proof sets - but then I realized the proof set medallions were scalloped! I'd really like one of those 20 yen coins too! I passed up an opportunity to buy a 10 yen a couple of years ago and I'm still regretting it... Some pics of those mint sets

2 SilentAsian4Hire - this coin is not mine yet, I noticed it in a monthly newsletter from fujimint and then found the picture online. So it is 2nd in a row after the one in 1st post. What I don't like in the medal - there is no sign on the coin that it is silver(as it was the case with Trade dollar in 1st post), though there is COA available. 2 Bizybackson, may be no one heard of prefectures 1 oz coins because they bear huge numismatic premiums? So PM investors do not look in this direction. In Japan they are selling with 3-4 times melt and being collected like nothing else is available on the Earth))

the COA provided does say 1oz of 999 silver. Odd that the reverse reades 420 grains of .90 silver. Even if it's a reproduction I thought there was some sort of convention to put the correct content, weight, and material info on the actual bullion item. Very stunning coin though, only 2012 pieces at that.

I really like the design of this latest coin. I will sure buy 10 if it has "the correct content, weight, and material info on the actual bullion item" like poboxw said. I still want one though. I went to the fujimint website but can't read Japanese.... what's the cost for one of this, anyone know?

SilentAsian4Hire, fujimint haven't listed it yet. It was in a booklet of the mint they send monthly to after I bought 1st dragon. The ask price is 8600 yen plus shiping within Japan. worth 4 silver bullion o_O

@traevin: that is super sweet, I might just take another look at these coins, Panda America has the last 14 issued coins of which there are currently 20 released, not quite half of the 47 that runs until 2016. I'm sure they got the idea from the Canadian or State Quarters, these despite the colorization, are gorgeous proofs. And priced like a Perth Mint product.
