I am not that familiar with Flying Eagles but there are way too many feathers showing on the obverse for that side to be graded fine. However, I have no clue what is causing the obverse weak spots and the reverse does seem to be more in the fine range. I have never seen any (although that isn't saying much) with this sort of unbalanced wear. It must have some interesting story!

you can draw a line across the tail/hind legs that delininate the well struck portion from the portion that lacks detail. not sure grease would lead to this.

What a great coin! That center detail is amazing. It's just weakly struck around the edges, probably struck while they were adjusting press pressure. The mint had a lot of trouble with these due to the hard metal they were struck on.
I'm going to give this one an MS-58 and in hand turning it in the light I might even bump it to MS-60 depending on the surfaces.

The details on the eagle make me think AU but I don't know what to think about the rest of the coin. I can't tell if it happened at the mint or if it's post mint damage. To each his own, but I wouldn't be interested in the coin either way.

I think this one is a very early strike. Sure hope Rick Snow decides to take a look at this thread to give us an idea.

That coin would go AU if, not for the small rim ding, I'll say EF, nice Flying Eagle.

This FE is a very interesting one!!

I agree the lack of detail in some places seems to stem from the coin's initial strike.

I originally thought the lack of detail on the eagle's tail was PMD, but with no corresponding damage to the rim/edge, I now no longer think that.

The lack of complete pressure for the strike also (IMO) caused the lack of detail in the reverse wreath.

A VERY cool coin! Overall, AU-55, due to rim dings and a touch of wear on the eagle's breast feathers.

I'm still on this one at AU-58. The softness on the eagle's head works it's way back into the neck feathers. The high points on the breast I believe are also flat because of the inconsistent strike. Looking at the top edge of the left wing which is very high, shows no wear at all. This coin saw very little circulation if any. Maybe it was dropped at some point putting the tick at the 12 O'clock position, but that could also be strike related as well but would need to be in hand to know for sure.

Golly that's an interesting one. You really need an expert to be sure of anything. I don't know what to make of that weakness in that wreath but the obverse says to me around AU.

I don't think there is any wear on this coin...this looks like a die issue, I could be wrong of course. Interesting?

It's a great coin even with the weak spots. The feathers on that left wing are unbelievably sharp.

The combination of all of the posts so far add up to a correct description for this coin.
