Are proof sets known to tone in the mint packaging over the decades? I haven't experienced that yet with my 1970s to present proof sets.

From what I was reading in the Red Book, the packaging for the 70's to 80's isn't that great and can cause them to tone.

That is interesting to hear. I have the 2012 Red Book and I don't see that listed anywhere.

What issue do you have and what page # is it on?

Thanks,
Wes

Sorry, I misspoke. I actually read it in the Official Red Book, A Guide Book of Franklin and Kennedy half dollars. Page 261 titled 1977-1989 the Modern Era in its Infancy. I will scan and attach a picture.

May be hard to read, but basically even though they are enclosed in hard plastic, the other materials are not "inert" and can tone the coins.

The sets are not air tight, so where you store them is important. They need to be kept in a clean environment with low humidity and a stable temperature.

I have an 82 proof set that hazed terribly. I keep it diplayed on my bedroom dresser. I dont know if that had naything to do with the hazing but it bugs me.
I'm tempted to get another one (I like that medallion they put in in place of the SBA) but am worried it might haze too.

Jbuck is underplaying those God forsaken 75-79 sets. Pliers and a flat head screwdriver and patience. I have NEVER been able to cleanly break one open. Those result in flying plastic shrapnel. The dogs and children dive for cover. The wife leaves the room. I fill the air with verbiage unfit for anyone with any kind of sensitivities. NOT pretty.

The new ones, yeah, those are a breeze. I just use a knife blade to pry them open as I dont want to break a nail.

Well now I want to crack one open...just to see my cats dive for cover and a good excuse to curse.

Thanks for posting the page. That is good to know. I'll check my sets to see if they are toning. It's been many years, since I've looked at them.

You can get a '79 proof set for under 10 bucks(shipping included)on ebay. Either buy a new one or two, it would be easier than breaking the cases open and trying to re-package them.
