When Dansco comes out with the revised 7070 I think there will be a flood of old ones on the market. A lot of people will move their collection to the new version and sell off the old one.

Good idea, jcd390! Quote: A lot of people will move their collection to the new version and sell off the old one. I will not. The last time they revised it, I just ordered a replacement "bicentennial page" with the changes, which added the Sac Dollar, Statehood Quarter, ASE, and Commemorative Dollar holes. Everything else in the album stayed the same, except for some changes to the descriptions (for example, mine says Turban Head, where the current ones say Capped Bust).

I agree that revised is not usually better. I don't think that Statehood Quarters, prez dollars, territory quarters, or ATBs really belong myself. Then you have to add the Westward Jeffs, 2009 cents, the 82 variety cents, it goes on and on, ad nauseum.

Great Idea for the type set! A nice collection and some family history. How about a family photo album to go with it?

yea purchasing the coins is whats its all about - finding an album is secondary in my opinion - I dont even use albums for my complete coin sets

I think that's a terrific idea! The Dansco 7070 is intended for loose coins. It's probably OK to crack open one or two slabs, but if you intend to collect the whole thing slabbed then consider this: https://www.eaglecoinholders.com/os...oducts_id=65I love their products, but invariably throw away the table of contents page and make my own to fit my particular needs. The pages are GREAT for storing slabbed coins. I really thing cracking open a bunch of slabs is an unwise move financially. If you want to use Dansco, get loose coins. If you want to collect slabbed coins, use Eagle or some other variety of slabbed coin holders. Just my humble opinion.

Someone I know made their own type set. They used 2x2's and those pages that hold 20 of the 2x2's. This way he could add or remove or rearange coins as he feels like doing. And since in a 3 ringed binder, can make it as large as he wahts too. Something to think about.

jcd390 What you are doing here is building a family heirloom collection. Lets hope the rest of your family appreciate the significance of this as much as you do.
One way of ensuring this is to press the slabs into rebates in a custom made board, something like a Dansco album, and include space alongside each slab for a photograph of the family menber to which the coin refers.

Ok guys, I just have to say, this is why I love this forum. I presented an idea and so many of you have made some great suggestions that I never even thought about! Thanks again and now I really can't wait to get started!!!

It's such a great idea. It gives your collection much more meaning. A focus is great. Kind by accident, I got into collecting 1854 coins for all available holes in my 7070. With the silver "arrow" coins, there's only three years to choose from and I'd noticed I inadvertantly was getting 1854s, so I stuck with it. Half Cent, cent, 3 cent silver, Half Dime, dime, quarter, half, and dollar (there's gold, of course, but that's out of my league): that's 8 coins, so I'm building a full-year set in my 7070 (though the dollar is going to be tough).

The idea of building your own Type Set instead of using the 7070 gets more appealing the more I think about it! I would love to have the flexibility to decide that including a 1909 VDB penny is silly, but I want to include the slightly larger Capped Bust quarter with motto. I like having more control over what I collect and how!

I've put together a 20th century/early 21st century custom type set in a Dansco plain album and it pleases me greatly deciding what types to include (like three varieties of Standing Liberty quarters, and not the 7070's two). For this album, I've also decided that the State Quarters are represented by one design of my choosing, plus another in silver proof. Same for the territories. Same for the ATB. Six coins represent those types in this album (not an unwieldy 56 or 112 coins - I've got separate albums or that whole shebang anyway!). One representative Presidential dollar (Godless and not) also... you get the point. Way much more fun to curate your own album. So go for it, Lars.

Unfortunately I've already committed to the 7070, but in retrospect I wish I would have done it differently. Perhaps some day I will redo the whole thing. I doubt I will purchase too many items I don't need. The 1909 VDB was one, but I already picked that up. I'm likely to want more, instead of fewer, coins in other situations so I'll stay with the 7070 for now and re-evaluate later. If I was collecting slabbed then I would definitely do something different that crack them open and put them in a Dansco!
