This is a lot like a "Smackdown" topic. It got a lot of good responses, including submissions of interesting coins one would not expect to "win." Do you think we should prefer this format to the contest format of Smackdowns? -- Warren

Even though I have yet to win and probably will not win, I prefer the contest format. I like the competition even though I need a handicap .

I still like the competition format (as long as there aren't too many rules ... unfortunately, the last competition kinda went-off the tracks a wee bit) ... It's actually I bit too bad, because the ol' Green-theme would have been a total winner for SMACKDOWN, but now the whole wow-factor has already been exploited through this thread ... ... oh well, I'm sure that there are still numerous other winner SMACKDOWN-topics out there waiting on deck!!?

Sometimes we can readily tell that the green is real... sometimes the green is false..... This second coin is an example of a waxy patina that appeared on coins sold by "monneron" a few years back... Martin

This was the handle of an ebay seller that sold many coins a few years back. Many people questioned their authenticity.

Do you believe the patinas are false or the coins?

I have never seen a patina like the one on my Probus on any other coin. It is not like green crusties and seems to sit one the surface rather than being a patinated surface layer. It has a slightly greasy feel. It is not like any Jax treated coin that I have seen. It isn't easy to remove and I have tried a few techniques.
At the end of the day I believe the coin to be legitimate but the patina to be false.

Another "monneron". Note the same patina.

There was an article in the Celator back in 2006 I think, with a detailed analysis of the alloy of some of Monneron coins. It concluded that they were indeed genuine.

Sometimes the green in photos come out wrong, but this one really does look just like the green I see on my screen. Macrinus, 217-218 28 mm. Struck at Nicoplois ad Istrum. Magistrate Agrippa (not the famous Agrippa) Artemis advancing right, drawing arrow from quiver and holding bow, hound leaping at her side. -- Warren
