The reverse is excellent, so much detail remains. The coin has other flaws but I think its a beauty for the reverse alone

This is the same coin presented on wildwinds, RIC 113, third example. Apparently it was sold by CNG in 2002. I wish I could get it at that price now.

WOW => what I absolutely "love" about this coin is:

=> "wolf and twins in pediment"

Oh, and it doesn't hurt that there's a "captive between" ... the dude is standing on a captive!!

=> man, this coin is nuthin' but sweet!!

Steve, at the rate your buying there will be none for the rest of us!

Just joking around, great coin! And a coincidence, at the local coin show on Sunday I bought a very similar Maxentius (but with just Roma seated in the temple and not in nice of shape, but still pleasing).

Sometimes, the opinion of an outsider contains a grain of truth.

Sure, I noticed the "bite" out of the edge, but not for long. The beard caught my eye second.
And then I was caught up in the overall beauty of this -- BEAUTY!

Eye appeal? WOW factor? Call it what you will, how can anyone NOT like this coin?
Even a non-ancient collector like I am.

Ave Roma! (Hail Rome!)

It's not a rare type though it certainly is interesting with a lot going on. The emperor is standing on a captive and the captive has his head turned upwards to look at the empreror (I always liked that detail).

I used to own one as part of a small collection of the coins of Maxentius that I put together. I hadn't bought a Maxentius since 2004... until this week when my will crumbled.

I find the reverse of the coin above to be really well executed but there is something not quite as well executed about the style of the portrait as it could be. I think that this is purely personal preference though.

jwharper says he saw this coin on wildwinds. I must admit that I couldn't find it.

This is what mine looked like:-

Mine was sold through a main dealer in 2007 for about 75% what this coin is being offered at.

I see two faults. The edge is obvious. I can not explain the lump on the forehead. The style is good and overall it is a coin worthy of consideration even by the x6 collection. Mine was purchased in 1993 when there were a lot of nice Maxentius coins on the market (a hoard, I assume). It was cheaper then. It is always better to buy when there are a lot on the market and before people decide a coin is interesting. The trouble is that it can be hard to figure out what is 'current' before they are 'last year'.

Did you notice how much better strike is on the x6 reverse? ... or did you just see the better edge on mine?
