Cant Decide Between A Walking Liberty Set Or A Type Set

Ya, its a hard choice. Basically whatever I do choose is going to come with a long time and large investment of my money for quite a while. As a college student, this is a big decision. As you may know, I do not have a ton of money. This is something that I hope will appreciate in value over time as well as be a fun hobby. I have collected now for about 2 years on and off now. Many people my age do not collect, so it is hard sometimes to continue to fund my hobby as well as many other social activities, school, etc.

The one thing I like about the type set is the full history behind each coin. I feel it's nice to have a little of everything. The one thing that caught my eye is the way you can display it. I LOVE those cases that you can put them in (forgot the name), but they look like something that you could mount on a wall, and that idea to me is pretty cool. Putting coins in an album is one thing, but being a very visual person, I love to display things I have purchased in my room!

As I was think about collection options, I stumbled onto this PCGS page which lists many different type sets, so if a 7070 is not quite what you are looking for, you have many more options to look at. You can click the description of each type set and get a description of the set. Click another link and you get a complete list of every coin in that set. Copy and paste into a spreadsheet and you have your own checklist.

Ya I really like that one. One thing about that one in particular is that it seems fairly easy to complete and probably not nearly as expensive. Another good bonus is that once I get those, I can always upgrade and go to the 7070 set.

The 7070 set is a solid one, but it is pricey especially if you do the gold page. The only big downfall is its lack of modern coinage since they seem to refuse to update it and theres rumors the owner of Dansco just kind of runs it part time now so that update may not be coming anytime soon. The intercept shield albums have a real nice coin selection too, the big complaint there is the pages are pretty things so its a snug fit with some of the dollars and the ASE especially

@Tjmcman - Sorry, I don't know which of those = 7070. I stumbled into the page looking for an alternative to the 7070. Lack of album availability and the priceyness of the gold in the 7070 sent me looking for something else.

Well, as much as I do like the walking liberties..I have begun to have more of an appreciation for all of coins, as I am a big history buff! So I think that my choice is to start a 7070 set. I can always have something to work on, and like many of you have mentioned, it may take me a while to complete. To me that is a great set, and will give me a broad view of all coins that can be collected.

Now from here, what album or plaque should I purchase to keep the coins safe, and display them properly? I am open to all help and suggestions.

Most would fill their 7070 with the best quality coins they could get. Others will focus on the first year of the issue and still others will focus on the rarest coins they can get for the opening. Some have graded sets and still others will have expanded sets on coin differences missing from the dansco album. I won't even go into the commemorative holes there are lots of reasons for people's options there.
