Quote: What makes you think that your kids will NOT take them to a Pawn Shop, even if they find them in a safety deposit box? Have you taught them what is important and what is not? Have you explained to them WHY you take such great effort to protect them? Without proper education, it does not matter how you protect your coins. At the very least, include a letter in the safety deposit box along with the coins. Instructions as to how to sell sell them if they wish, or which coins that you would like to have passed on to the next generation. Any coin(s) which belonged to your ancestor(s) is(are) prime candidate(s) to be kept and passed to your kids' kids. I have no one to leave coins to that have any idea of what is what with coins. Yes I've tried but it's sort of like getting a fish interested in trees. Or a teenager to not like cars. Some things are just ment to be. The way I look at it is after I'm gone, I will probably, maybe, not worry about my coins. Nor my clothing, furnature, cars, tools, flashlights, etc.

Clarification: When I say "display," I mean what kind of holders do you put the coins in.

carl, Quote: I have no one to leave coins to that have any idea of what is what with coins. Have you considered putting it in your will that the coins go the the operators of CCF, who subsequently would auction them off to its members, with the proceeds going to site. I'm completely serious. I know many of us would appreciate the opportunity to bid on your vast Mercury dime collection and it would support a cause that you, presumably, approve of.

You make it difficult for me to be a curmudgeon. I am a fan of mylar flips over cardboard holders. Less work.

On the note of not letting your coins go to a pawn shop - I'm 17 and interested in coin. My dad already gave me a little bit of stuff he collected in the nineties because he knows Ill treat it well.
There should be some way to make sure it goes somewhere nice. Short of giving it to someone on CCF, the best you could do is bury it for a more interested person to find in the future with a detector. You just cant force it on them - perhaps give them some for christmas, slowly lure them into it.

unless you are hording coins as an investment, in which case you would have no emotional connection to your coins,i believe that collections should be seen and appreciated. that's not to say that I let every person who comes into my house see it.
i would hate to have to go to the bank just to see my babies.

Mine have gone into 2x2s for a long time but I am transferring them (slowly) to mylar flips. I thought the 2x2s were great until I took a liking to flips. They look even better IMO.

Quote: When I say "display," I mean what kind of holders do you put the coins in. I used Dansco albums; both the normal ones (holes with plastic protective slides) and ones that keep 2x2 holders (twelve pocket pages). So, my single coins, ones that really do not belong to a particular set or series, are in a 2x2 that is stored in one of my "miscellaneous" Dansco 2x2 albums.

To jpsned, You might have used the word protect or store rather than display. As you can see, each collector has his or her own favorite(s). I am not married to a particular type of holder. As I have said, each coin gets the amount of protection that it deserves. If push comes to shove, a piece of Saran Wrap works just fine! The following link will direct you to a topic posted in June of 2011. "Instructions for Heirs?" Further posts concerning the ultimate disposition of one's coins should go there. I intend to do just that. https://goccf.com/t/89922&whichpage=1Sorry, jpsned, for having your original topic highjacked into other directions.

@Matthewvincent This is very good advice for all of us. My family, although not interested in coins know never to just dump all of it at a pawn shop as I have reviewed this with them many times over the years. In fact I have gone a step farther, and although I have never liked the reasons TPGs came into existence (or their way of handling things even now), I do believe their two redeeming factors are authenticating and also making it so that I can let my loved ones know which coins to pay extra special attention to. in fact, I have instructed my wife of two places to go in case anything happens to me. One is the local brick and mortar store where I consider the dealer not only an above-reproach-trustworthy individual (hey - he was a respected police officer!), but a friend as well (oozentoo on ebay - I get nothing for this!). And I have instructed her to get here with the CCF family for information since I know all of you will make sure the best comes o the situation. I also have been thankful that after three of my kids have already left the nest, and on their own in their own time, all three have come back to me at one point and sincerely said, "Dad, I want to thank you so much for teaching me how to think." Two of them also came to me and told me their peers come to them for advice b/c, without trying to, my kids have built a reputation as thinkers/problem solvers. What more could a dad ask for? Now it would be nice if my own brains would get back in line So I am not concerned they will do something dumb with them. But I am concerned - especially in this day of non-privacy - that someone would be able to take them from my home despite Uncle Winchester and Uncle Remington being permanent residents. I admit I was even a bit paranoid when I first signed up on CCF knowing that i was admitting to anyone with access to the web that I am a numismatist. But, again, a safe deposit box definitely makes it easier to rest assured my family will end up with my collections. But - as the old saying goes - you can't have your cake and eat it to. Well, I have my collection, but nothing with any value is readily accessible to where I can always enjoy it at a moments notice.

Oh...keeping in line with the subject of this thread. I use albums for general stuff but like to protect my medium range stuff in 2X2s and may, eventually, just transfer everything to 2X2s for safe (from corrosion of being next to possible "humidity-philic" cardboard in albums). The best stuff, as mentioned, gets slabbed. Also I plan on making more of these (3 pieces of sandwiched Plexiglas - tapped for screws) in the future: But I want to experiment with making thinner ones to fit in a (modified?) 3-ring binder if possible.
