Sort of off topic, raymo, what part of Oregon are you from? I'm in north Portland. Are there any local graders or authenticators?

I would tend to think that it is a crafted slug, to fool vending machines.

While the mint isn't infallible, their quality control on modern issues,(not talking nicks and scratches ) is pretty good. I think the bulk of the edge lettering mistakes were due to theft, not lack of quality control. I find it hard to believe that a total blank could make it out the door undetected.

well we have all seen unstamped planchets in differing stages get out of the mint from time to time so its definitely not something that can't happen. The way allot of these get out is they get stuck in the hopper when emptied to go into the machine and break loose when emptied into bags. These types of planchets have been found in a lot of differing series that the US has put out. I am not an expert in Modern coins so I am not sure this is original but I am just stating it has happened before and I don't see why it couldn't happen again. According to this webpage some have been found with edge lettering and some without http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page39.html . If I am not mistaken the type 1 planchets are ones that haven't went through the edge rolling process and the type 2 are the planchets that have , so if this is real it would be a type 2. Maybe the ones with edge lettering is called a type 3 (I am just talking here as I doubt that is what its called). If this had gone through the edge lettering machine there would be no doubt it was real but I still think its believable but not sure how you would authenticate it short of sending it in to a TPG or expert in errors

Thanks Bryan foe the link, what a great informational site. Everything you want to know about small dollars.

Despite assertions to the contrary by mint officials , I am not totally convinced that the mint does not let some of these coins " slip " by quality control on purpose as a way of fostering interest from collectors and non collectors in US coinage. Much like software engineers will hide " Easter eggs " in popular software.

I took it in to coin shop on Hawthorne Blvd in SE Portland, it weighs the exact same as a Presidential dollar and is a genuine blank planchet.

According to them. They took out a regular presidential coin and weighted them both out to be 8.1 ounces.

I hope that's a simple typo and you mean 8.1 GRAMS. If it's 8.1 OUNCES it's fake. And if the LCS doesn't know the difference between the two, well, be REALLY REALLY careful about buying or selling silver...

Yep, I let it sit on my shelf for that long. I live right by the coin shop so I decided to just stop by while going out with the lady.

8.1 ounces would be one hilariously heavy coin! Yeah, grams.

Hiya Scholz......I'm down around Eugene. One coin shop that I know of. Don't know any graders but I'm sure a coin shop would help.

I might get it graded by a TPG and hold onto it. They can be valuable
