Well, I found out that she paid less than $45 for it, so that's a major relief. But judging from her response, I'll side with those who said leave it in the slab just to keep it safe, but it will be in a 2x2 before next fall. Oh and for the record, the slab is a constant reminder of being taken so it won't last too long!

I'd leave it as is, it was a gift and she didn't pay much for it. Better make sure you show her you still have it a year or two from now.

I think you should drill a hole in the top and make a necklace out of it since it is a gift from a loved one.

You were lucky it was only $45.00. There have been some individuals who have paid actual MS whatever money for basement slabbed coins. That actually looks like it could be a good purchase for the price.

@Jayman

If it were me, it would boil down to what was worth more:
1. Having the Morgan in a 2X2
2. Knowing the one who gave it to you would be thrilled to see it, just as they gave it to you, at a later date.

The Vulcan in me says crack it - illogical humans play too many games b/c of emotions.

The human in me says don't crack it if you think they might care.

Knowing me, I'd crack it and later give an honest and plain explanation (better preservation, SGS standards etc.) when I showed it to them.

My F2F friends know I will be brutally honest with them b/c I ask them to be with brutally honest with me.

That's one of the things I told my wife before I married her. I told her I would not lie to her and if I thought a dress was ugly, or I did not like the new meal she was trying out, then that's what I would say (nicely). She has put up with over 25 years of it and is still smiling!

This is one of the rarest SGS Graded Coins I've seen as most of them are graded MS & PR68 to 70, and never a 65...

my dad gave me a 1976 half dollar in a big awkward case. I never took it out. I make room for it :)

Taken how? Sounds like she paid about what it was worth.

Yeah, I would have to say that is the lowest graded SGS I have ever seen. LOL

I kind of have to go with Earle. Let her know just how much it means to you that she thought that much of you and took the time to think of something you truly appreciate. It shows how much she loves you (in whatever appropriate way that might be, wife, daughter, sister) and that she thinks fairly highly of you. Immediately followed by exactly why that coin won't stay in that slab, but WILL be lovingly placed in an airtight (because does a 2x2 REALLY say you cherish that coin?) to protect it. If you feel that that will do the trick, woohoo! If not, keep that bad boy in that slab and just deal with it!

After getting all of your opinions, I must say that I have changed my mind. I'm going to display that SGS as though it's my pride and glory acquisition. I want to thank you all for reminding me that it was a gift from the heart and not to see it merely as a prize or an investment only. From time to time, I tend to get caught up in the grades/values and forget the care and love the Mrs. took to try to understand my world and participate in it.

Merry Christmas to all!
