Quote: ill give you £4 for that nasty old bludgeoned old roman thing... Haha, your offers tempt me Ben... I tried to do what Bobby did by outlining the key features of the coin; this is what I got... WBQ)OfPflfw~~60_12%20-%20Copy.jpg) I never realised how happy these emperors can be!

IT'S ARRIVED! It is very worn however my pictures don't really do it much justice; in hand the detail which I highlighted in the pictures below is clearly visible. I think I have tracked it down to Carausius AE Antoninianus RIC 98. IMP C CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right. PAX AVG B.F across fields, Pax standing left, holding olive branch and sceptre. Mintmark MLXXI in ex.

Looks to be of CARAVSIVS. Like my example, RIC 98, issued towards the end of his reign (293 A D), a more "natural look" unlike his early "bull necked" portraits. On your example, I think the two letters across the reverse fields are " B - B" and the exergue is " MLXXI" There is " ML" which is for "Monete Londinium" (Mint of London). It is thought the numerals represent the ratio of bronze to silver of the coin, so 20 (XX) parts bronze to 1 (I) part silver.

It's difficult to find a decent Carausius for any price. I saw a lot of them that were poorly manufactured and preserved.

Thanks Masis and Bobby. That's excellent that it was minted in London; I've been after a UK minted ancient for quite some time. I think when I have all my recent purchases to hand(Just waiting on a lot from Germany.) I'll have to do a post with them all together. I've only spent in the region of £70 and had a nice mixed bag ranging from Florian, Quintillus, Carausius, Claudius, few greek silvers and a mixture of reasonable common stuff. It has really bulked out the ancient section in my coin book which is good. I now have an ancient section to be proud of!

Quote:"I'm gonna go for B E " - bobbyhelmet Yes, that letter looks more like an E, being very angular, than a B. Still in the RIC 98 category.
