Because the money was a gift from a friend, I'd buy one coin that would be meaningful to me... At this time, I'd probably buy a Standing Liberty quarter at the best grade I could for the money.

But my personal coin would either be the best 1925 Stone Mountain Com. (goodness gracious I want one!) or something from my birth year that is absolutely beautiful.

There are coins you can get in XF within that amount. Amongst them are Indian heads, V nickels, Peace dollars, Mercury dimes, and maybe a Seated dime or quarter. I personally would probably just get a silver American eagle.

Oh man, I know exactly what I'd get:

A set-by-year (not mintmark) of wheats, 1909-1912, not counting 1911 (which I own). I'm trying to get at least one of each year before I go for the gold.

I'd get a Stone Mountain commemorative half in the highest certified grade I could get at the price.

I think I would go with a slabbed Morgan, MS-63 or better.

I wouldn't spend any more than the 50.00. If you keep it at 50 and under it will be a free coin to you. If you go over that price then it is not a free gift any more. I would get a higher grade common date Morgan or Peace dollar that would fit that price, and enjoy my gift.

That's what I would have done, gotten a couple of MS Mercury dimes. $50 would probably get 2-3 in excellent condition.

I'd go to a coin auction and submit some $50 bids on some $100+ coins. Every once in a while it works.
