I would grade it as a nice Fine-12. That is an awesome coin, by far the strongest 42/1 overdate I have seen! ~Jim

I would grade it a fine-12. The diagonal bands should be complete to earn a VF grade. Very nice coin, is it looking for a new home?

It came in today form PCI. Here is how they graded it. Sorry the photo did not take well. Image: 1942vf30.jpg46.5 KB

Wow. That's a good grade, I'd say a PCI VF-30 would be considered by the market to be anywhere from F-VF money, so somewhere in the six hundreds.
Great find, great story, please share more with the board if you have a chance!

My Brown and Dunn's guide says "The two diagonal bands must show where they cross the bundle of sticks. Liberty's hair braid will show considerable detail." The illustrations show considerably more detail the coin does. My Official A.N.A. Grading Standards for U.S. Coins says for VF-20, "Reverse: Wear shows on the two diagonal bands but most details are visible. All vertical lines are sharp." If I was feeling generous I would give the coin a F+ or F-15 but definitely not a VF-30. My recommendation is to get rid of the coin immediately; tell you what, I'll give you a shiny new dime for your beat up worn one, LOL!

You met J.T. Stanton at a show, and talked him into personally grading the coin? And he signed the slab for you? I like you. For the record, J.T. Stanton is, among other things, the proprietor of Stanton Books & Supplies, co-author of the Cherrypicker's Guide, and the newly-appointed CEO of PCI. I expect PCI to enhance its' position among TPG's under his leadership. He's, um, a rather respected figure in numismatics, to say the least. He's also the author of an excellent article on coin photography, near and dear to me: http://www.coin-gallery.com/cgphotography.htm

vf30 is quite generous on their behalf but the autograph makes it jump at least a half grade :) Congratulations What a great story on how you found it and your mothers sacrifice in keeping them for her kids. Terrific

The coin is on the edge of F12-VF20, but VF30 is a stretch. Glad you sold it for what you wanted.
