Hey pepperkat, nice coin you have there. I say F-12 for the grade. I don't think there is enough detail in the hair braids and the feathers to go any higher. On the reverse the bands have to much wear. The diagonal bands are almost gone. Nice clean rims.

Wow.,,,,nice coin. I do not know about grading this coin,
but I think it is the clearest 42/41 I have ever seen.

I don't know much about grading Mercury dimes, but that is one sweet coin. |

Hi Pepperkat, I'd call this a VF-20 to VF-30 coin. I have a very similar example that ICG graded as EF-40 which I thought was slightly on the generous side. I think they gave it a little bump because it's a key date. There are some very deceptive forgeries of the 1941/41 Mercury. Yours looks OK but you might consider having it authenticated and graded by a top TPG at some point, especially if you ever decide to sell it. Very nice! |

The coin is a technical VF-25 ,,I would not be surprised to see it slab at VF-30 by todays market grading standards.
Very nice variety coin ,, Nice 42/1-P example !!

Thank you all very much. My mom retired as a grocery store checker in the early 1980s. She obtained her coins from the store. The manager, at the end of the night, would put aside Lincoln pennies and silver coins for her. Mon would roll the coins and save them. In the 1970's she used most of her coins for face value to buy a car. Last week she divided her coins and gave an equal amount to her children and grandchildren still in the rolls she put them in. I have thousands of coins to go through and I am putting them in 2x2 holders. I'm so very new at this so from time to time I hope you all do not mind if I post a coin or ask for advise. I now have to figure out how to send in a coin for grading.

That is a nice coin, and since I'm conservative I go along with those who put it in the f-12/15 range. Good luck with your collection, love to see more.

PCGS Grading guide :
f-12/15
the hairalongthe backwill show slight detail,,and the wing willhave only a few feathers present.
the jaw line will start to blend into the neck though there is clear seperation,,the diagonal bands will be blury in the center,snd the horizontal bands will be totally flat .about one half or slightly more of the vertical line of the fasces are still clear .

I met J.T. Stanton from PCI at a coin show this weekend and will be giving him some coins to grade. He said he would grade this coin himself. When I get it back from him I will post his grading.

I would grade it as a nice Fine-12. That is an awesome coin, by far the strongest 42/1 overdate I have seen! ~Jim

I would grade it a fine-12. The diagonal bands should be complete to earn a VF grade. Very nice coin, is it looking for a new home?
