I'm going to try and get a better picture of this coin, but this will get you started... -Steve Edited by asciibaron 05/03/2007 12:37 pm

Steve,
If you can get a bigger picture of the reverse it'd be appreciated. From this pic it looks like the potential for full split bands. I'm going to guess MS64 or MS64FSB.

Steve, are those flow marks or die work between the 9 and the 4? Or is it on the plastic?
Nice pics of a nice Merc.

I would agree with it being in the 64 to 65 range. Especially if it looks as good 'in hand' as it does in the pics.

there are flow marks around the date. this is a lovely coin in person and when compared to a cleaned coin, she really stands out as a work of art. I figured it as an MS60 and based my offer on that grade. the dealer was asking $18.00 and I paid $6.00 - a fair offer considering MS60's retail for $8.00 or so. after studying the coin for a few days, I think I undergraded it, but I don't want to add "ownership" points to the grading sheet...

Die state excluded ,,the pics are not big enough to get a good fix on that part of the coin ,, I will only venture to the point of saying I think the obverse die is much newer than the Reverse, the strike quality of the obverse is outstanding !!
MS-65*
the bands are not full and are the only reason the coin could not go above a 65 . to be higher the strike would have to be full.
she is a very pretty coin !! and the price was more than right !!

It looks MS-65 to me. I see a couple tiny ticks on the neck, but a 65 should still be possible. Not FSB, but a heck of a coin for the price. Nice pick!

Looks like it should be a 65. Not quite FSB, but a fairly well-struck and very nice-looking Merc. ~Jim

ROFL Old Dan - that's a good one. my father is my mentor and he likes the 1945D I picked up much better. it's an FSB and is easily an MS65, maybe even higher. he says I have an eye for grading coins and so far I have been pretty spot on. here's the 1945D FSB -Steve

Neither coin will grade MS65. The bands are not split, but full, pending contact marks on the middle band. I grade the 1944 as MS63-64, but the pic is too "soft" to see much detail.
