Looks like Constantius Gallus to me. The coin looks real to me. But if it isn't it could fool me.

Looks like someone scraped the dirt off of it with the field scratches on both sides. Looks real to me.

I purchased this one at the nyinc this last weekend from a $10 bulk bag along with 6 others. It looked genuine to me also. Unfortunately I got home last night and found it to be magnetic:( I couldn't believe it! The closest match I could find is RIC VIII 65. http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/cons...us_II/t.htmlThe big difference that I see is that there are no round beads on the ends of the hair on OP. Where as there are on the example on wildwinds. None of the other coins are magnetic but I am now a bit paranoid. Along with the 6 $10 coins, I also purchased 5 other coins from the same dealer out of a $5 dollar bulk bag. I am suspicious about couple more because of weight. I will be posting each coin to get your guys feedback on each. Thank you for your feedback!  I was losing a lot confidence in my ability to evaluate ancients. |

That's interesting that this coin is magnetic. I never heard of such a thing but I bet it is possible because many different metals were used back then.

It is my understanding that if a coin is magnetic it is fake. However, please educate me! Are there known "real" specimens that are ferrous? A weak magnet will not stick to the coin but a strong magnet does. I guess it is possible for some iron to be in the mix.  Many of you have been at this longer than me. What do you think. I wonder if I should have passed on these coins. They looked very genuine to me but I will admit that the situation was a bit odd. At the show, the official seller at the booth was allowing another guy(seller) to have his coins out for 20% of the take. I did pay the official seller for the coins. I still think most of the coins are real but... And that is why I am posting with some buyers regret. BTW I really enjoyed the show!  It was a very educational experience. |

Being magnetic is not a kiss of death. I have had reports of others including some from this period. I don't have a certain answer but suspect that the pot metal used for the coins sometimes got some things out of the ordinary. There is a patch on top of the horse's head. Is that area more or less magnetic than the whole coin? My first magnetic coin made this page but I have had reports of more over the years. The style is OK to me. Doug. The area of the horses head does not seem to be more magnetic.. I really though the grim reaper had taken this one. Great article! Do you still think this one is genuine? I see hope peaking around the corner!  BTW I would be open to trading for this one:) Edited by TJsCoins
