I would rather have supreme court justices than vice presidents.

Its a question of what the people have said they prefer.

Not that old canard. :-) Every study shows that if you mention (just mention) "A dollar bill costs 9 cents to make and lasts 22 months in circulation, where a dollar coin costs 20 cents to make, and will last 30-50 years," people want to make the switch 2 to 1. If you conveniently leave out this matter, people will choose the bill 2 to 1. It's the fact that they're durable and save money which is the spoonfull of sugar that makes the medicine go down.

I'd also look favorably upon polymer notes for whatever bills we produce, provided the polymer can be sourced from something other than petroleum (which is doable and cost effective). However, the drawbacks are that they only last about 4 times longer than paper, cost twice as much to produce (given the cheapest and dirtiest process), and become brittle with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Where they are recyclable (huge plus over our current notes! I emphasize that), coins *still* outlast them by many decades.

(On a related note about the durability of coins, I received a 1946 nickel in my change today at Costco. Blows my mind that it's been circulating for nearly 70 years. I also received another three blasted 1964 nickels, which next year shall turn 50. They shall outlast *me.*)

Here we go again!

A President has to be dead for at least 2 years before his face can be on a coin.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presid...Coin_Program

Let's stop putting dead politicians on coins...enough with Presidents and certainly no Vice Presidents or Speakers of the House.

Put Lady Liberty, animals, Native Americans back on coinage and make sure to put the date and mintmark on the obverse not on the edge.

Most likely the dollar banknote is here to stay because of the lobbyists in Washington.

Matchbox, you beat me to what I was going to say. I am sick of dead presidents on our dollar coins, although I like dollar coins. The Native American designs are so much better and I like the one-year reverse designs.

Yes, let's go back to the great allegorical figures of the past. Lord knows this country needs some inspiration--and it's not coming from the politicians.

As noted, this bill is dead. From the article...

None of the previous arguments for termination seem applicable to the current situation. The coins are now produced in only the quantities which Americans actually want, the build up of excess coins in storage has stopped, and the coins are sold to the public at a premium price. It is difficult to see any government waste in what has become a purely profitable endeavor.

Do we stop at Ford? Do we skip Carter to get to Reagan?
The legislation is ambiguous. Reading it one way, Carter could be skipped to get to Reagan, reading it another, it has to end with Ford. I have always held that when the time comes, something will be passed to remove the ambiguity.

So what happens when we finish the list of past presidents, do we immortalise our current office holder and do we process coinage of past presidents that are still living?

The law states that with the end of the President dollar series all of the dollar coins revert to the Sac design, probably now the NA dollar series.

So if Hillary Clinton runs and wins in 2016 Will she be coined in the 1/2 ounce spouse gold in 2017, and a Presidential dollar in 2018 during her term?

Since Bill Clinton almost certainly will not qualify for a President dollar there will also be no Hillary First Spouse. And even if Hillary ran for President and won in 2016 she would never be eligible for a President dollar coin.

I'm still wondering if we willhave a living Rosalynn Carter, and Nancy Reagan on their first spouse coins. If Carter dies in time for his coin Rosalynn and Nancy will be eligible for their First Spouse coins. The authorizing law does NOT require them to be dead before they can be on the coins.

I believe I read somewhere that Washington specifically did not want his portrait on coins/currency, yet he's on two of the most used today. If that's true I'm sure he'd agree with the "no presidents" sentiment were he here on CCF to weigh in.

Throwing something into this discussion:

I read here on the CCF that John Kerry* is from the county where the bill-paper-making company is located, and that it's in large part due to them lobbying him to keep the $1 bill that we still have it.

Sometime this month he will be leaving the Senate.

Anybody want to speculate on what this may or may not do to our currency's current format? Anything, nothing, lots of things?

*about whom I am sure we all have strong feelings pro or con or otherwise, so let's just leave this to bare facts, if we can, lest we get canned into General Discussion again. I will, however, not object to anybody saying he has a horse face. Sorry, Senator, you do indeed have a horse face.

Probably not a whole lot though they did lose a lot of power in terms of whose backing them. The company is based in Mass so who ever replaces him will likely pick up where he left off.

However in the past they had Kennedy and Kerry backing them who had a lot more clout in the Senate than the two new Senators will have. If it was going to happen now would be the time since they have two freshman senators with minimal influence, but only time will tell

Company is based in Mass, but will the incoming Senators be from that county, or close to it? I would think they'd feel the stronger "ties of kinship" to a company close to them than one all the way across the state. There's clout and there's also this to consider . . . .

. . . . lobbying = $$$. These incoming Senators will not have been from big, multimillion dollar elections where lobbyists also have lots of clout. They'll be appointed. Will that tie be there without the pocket-lining?

The county ties are highly overrated imo. Kerrys worth a quarter billion, the amount of time he spent in that county or the "local boy" ties is probably minimal with houses all over the place like most of them have. The supporting local business for votes and their money likely meant far more. Its possible he could still try and help them behind the scenes but not needing them anymore I would suspect they wont even be in the top 100 things hes cares about. For all we know he couldnt care less about the dollar and just supported it for the elections funds, even if he returned to the Senate he could always blame his replacement for the change.

Mass is having a special election for the seat. I'm pretty sure Kerry was reelected in 08 as well. Unless they have some special rules that would mean that the replacement will basically just be a placeholder. Theyll be gearing up for reeelection in 2014 basically from day 1 which would make the money very valuable to them.

I dont see the support from the Mass senators changing, but considering the change in names the people who care what they have to say could be drastically different.

I doesn't matter if they live in the same county, or in one all the way across the state, the company is in THEIR state and it is the only company that produces the paper for the currency. It means jobs in their state and they will tend to protect it. After all the Senators will probably want to get re-elected and they will want that lobbyist money. They aren't beholden to them now, but would be perfectly happy to become beholden to them in the future.

State Quarters went over great so why not all coins with that design. Not just baby Dollars but Cents, Nickels, Dimes, Halves and Dollar coins. Actually paper money too.
Imagine not having to stop making any coins or currency. Most would be grabbed as fast as they are made for collections.
