CC99999: David Golsn is one of the authors of the volume that I purchased and I believe a number of his and other coins are pictured in the book. There are plenty of good illustrations showing just what the varieties look like. I only hope that my poor magnifying glass is up the task for my weary eyes.

By the way I hope that my comments about this book do not land me in trouble with the moderators, but I thought the comments might be interesting to everyone. Including Jbuck.

@ghostrider- very cool summary of the proceedings. made me feel like I was almost there.
Several Ike varieties are attributable at different TPGs. NGC so far seems to be the most conservative followed by PCGS for number of attributable varieties- they follow the Cherrypickers Guide- which is a publication we constantly work with.
The reason more varieties aren't attributed by these two grading services has to do with the finite amount of space in the CPG and not due to the lack of great varieties. We have submitted nearly 20 new varieties for inclusion in the next edition.
Our DIVA program is designed to speed that process up and let Ike collectors know that a series expert from our group can vouch that the coin is in fact a variety we've identified.
We are currently hard at work on the next book. And once it's ready to go, I'll make an announcement. Know that it is being written for collectors at all skill levels- so it is approachable- but it has so much actionable information in it- that you WILL become an Ike nut after looking through this book. :)
Thanks for sharing your experience.
@solotime- Ikes in mint state are typically not available at banks and in Gem (MS-65) and above, Ikes are certainly worth much more than face value. Your dealer may have an anti-modern bias- I don't know where he gets his information.

Quote: I am putting together a simple year / mintmark set of SBAs. I'm not going too crazy into all the varieties, just getting a few of the more popular ones. Same here. Great minds tend to think alike.

@cc99999, he must of met non-ms one's I guess. I really didn't think of the grades they would be in. But I never got a roll so I don't think I would find one. He has different grades of IKE's. such as: MS-60 to MS-65.

Quote: Same here. Great minds tend to think alike. Hmm, something like that... I have just never been able to get into the minor varieties of most coins. I have tried going through a few rolls of State Quarters looking for some of the known varieties. By about the end of the first roll, I found myself incredibly bored. I have probably $30 or so in Jefferson nickels that I intend to examine for varieties, but I just can't motivate myself to do it. But a lot of collectors ARE interested in this. Look at the Ike Group or all the different VAMs for Morgan dollars. Collecting should be about what you enjoy, not what others enjoy. Unless of course, you are looking to profit

Quote: baseball21 you right about luck being pary of search for the Ikes, but over the past year I have been able to add to my Ikes buts it is a tough one trying to amass a stash. I've put together mine of the past year and half by doing a diligent search. I always see stories on here about people finding them but the only things I've had any success finding is a couple War Nickels and a buffalo every now and then. Ill ask when I go to the bank if they happen to have any but I'm way past the point of trying to hunt them down that way

baseball I usually go to a few banks and many times I'm skunked in my search. It may sound trite but you have to keep at it. I hadn't had any luck for a few weeks but Friday I did score some Ikes. You're one up on me as I have never found any Buffalo nickels and I searches more than a few boxes of nickels. Someday I may find one.

Ive gotten a couple dateless and a 1937 for those. Nickels seem to be the only thing that havent been picked dry in this area, I really couldnt even find wheat pennies, I think I got 1 out of a couple thousand pennies

From what everyone's posted it seems like its hard to find Ike's in banks and yet every bank within my area have them I can ask any teller and all of them have 5-10 in their drawer, in the beginning I thought they were hard to find but after figuring out each teller had them then I lost interest in them. It seems like the only thing the tellers in my area don't have is half dollars they have plentiful amounts of $2 and Ike's but never any halfs.

Really? That's surprising. I have never gotten Ikes or SBAs from the bank. Once when I asked if they had any of the "larger dollars", and the teller just laughed.

Voshus007 while the half dollars are not all that plentiful in my area of the country, I gladly bring some up to your area so I could get some Ikes. Hopefully you're up the West Central Illinois because that's were I going on vacation this summer. I was planning on doing some coin hunting there.

I have gotten several Susan B's from ignorant clerks given to me in change as quarters.
I stash those away along with Sac$ and Bicentennial quarters.

Sorry ghostrider but I'm down in Florida although I would love for you to bring the halfs to my area. Everytime I ask a teller they'll say "ohh, a man just came in and bought them all". And it's every time this guy must be good because its always before I get there. Haha the only one I have ever got from the bank was one covered in gum.

Voshus007 depending upon where you are located I could have been the fellow who got to the bank just before you did. Being retired I usually make the rounds of certain banks (not stopping at just one bank). What I usually do (since I roll search either dimes or quarters) is to ask for just one roll from the teller and then ask if they may have Kennedy halves, Ikes, Sacs, or Susan B. But mostly I'm looking for Eisenhower dollars. There is a dealer that I usually stop in to see every couple of weeks, and the last time that I was there he said that he has over 100 Ikes and that he usually donates them to the boy scouts if he can't unloar them elsewhere. When I asked what he's looking for he told me that he is looking for $.05 over face. Well, since I didn't have the money when I was in, I told him that I'll be back next week. After all, $.05 over face is so close to face a person has to be touched not to take advantage of it. So Wednesday afternoon I'm going to his store to try and see about picking them up. I'll let you know if I'm successful. But the thing to remember is not to quit trying and to be somewhat creative. Things do happen. I'm still picking up Susan B's.
