This was extremely popular around 1970 and in 1973 I had made numerous cubes with coins, photos, gold watch parts, etc. inside multi-shaped forms and gave most of them out as gifts.
The few I had kept for myself was tossed in the garbage sometime in the late 80's or early 90's as the plastic turned a ugly yellowish color..

In 1972 I was at Walt Disney World. In one of the many shops they had a large - possibly 2 foot wide - lucite half sphere filled with concentric circles of 1972 pennies starting with a small circle on top and working downward with larger circles until they reached the base. There were a LOT of pennies in this thing. Being young, but always on the lookout for good coins, I started looking for a 72 DDO. Sure enough, there was at least one I saw before my Mom dragged me away from that amazing sight. I do not remember the price, but do remember it was one of those trinkets made for people with more income than what my parents wanted to pay

In answer to what that other customer said, no, it is not illegal in the least bit. It is not damaging or altering the coins.
I have seen these with Morgans, and somewhere I have an Ike as a paper weight that my dad had.

My grandson is 3 months old. I bought him a birth year set. Does that qualify for the youngest numismatist?

ACETONE? Thank you very much. I have one of those with a 1922 Peace $, 2 1955 dimes and 2 1959-D pennies. I paid $5 for it in one of those so called antique malls and would love to get my hands on that silver. So exactly what do I have to do? I also have a 3 minute egg timer encased with a BU 1968 Canada quarter, dime, nickle and penny - of which I "believe" the quarter and dime are the silver ones. But my wife probably won't let me dissolve that one since she uses it occasionally. No yellowing on either one. Still very clear. The strange thing is if you look straight on at the silver dollar it looks tarnished, but looking from the side, it looks pristine.
