Some counters are set to reject silver, some aren't. I'm all for buying bags, but, whatever you do, please don't return your coin to the same bank you purchased them from.
It's the fastest way to get cut off from future purchases.

Only once (and never again) bought a sealed bag of 1k face quarters.
Not one silver, plus the count was short $17.25
Luckily I got the money back.

What you could do is drop a silver nickel or a silver dime and see if it rejects it if you don't know whether or not it accepts silver coins.

Good idea Trent C. Yeah, I may have to give it whirl and see what happens. I'm all for keeping relationships at my bank in A+ condition too, I've been in customer service for far too long and appreciate their position as well as my own desires. The question now is what denomination to start with... hmmm...

I do bags as much as I can. I have it worked out to where two of my banks will give me whatever they want from their coin machines. These are customer deposited bags from the coin counter in the lobby. I find silver in the m all teh time. I do not complain to teh bank if I get a foreing coin or come up a penny or dime short. there will be errors made by the machine (pennies in the dimes, dimes in the pennies), so I just figure it works out for me in the long run. It took years of asking and I have only gotten permission from two branches to do it. I find all kinds of stuff in there - silver, good foreign, old ocins. Its probably similar to roll hunting with the exception that you can really score it big if someone dumps a bunch of silver or buffaloes or whatever. you get them all - whereas with bank boxes sthat dump would get spread out over several boxes. good luck

I feel like it depends on what you are looking for.
They might be short, so if you only want silver, the I would stay away from quarters since they are hard to find and the risk of losing more than yo make is high.
If you keep copper, the DIFINITELY get bags of cents. even if it is short by 10% you still can make that up easily by selling the copper.

I get everything I can afford.

Interesting on the quarters baysinger626. I wonder, with the different sizes of dollars do most machines accept the older Ike's or do they not even fit into the sorter anymore and they have to count them out with a teller? I just started a BU presidential set and Native/Sac set so I may start there if you think I may get a shot at scoring some Ike's. If not, maybe I'll go Halves or Dimes.

Only two banks in town will let me buy bags from their coin counters. I have bought half dollars, quarters and dimes and found silver in every single bag.

I have never seen a coin counter that will handle large dollar coins so they end up with the teller. All of the counters that I have seen take small dollars though. Thats why you always start out by asking "Are there any large dollar coins around?, no? How about half dollars?"

I just re-read my last post a GASP! my spelling is terrible. Sorry for that.. I should slow down.

My counter accepts Ikes. I have never intentionally run Ikes through, although two did go through by accident. "KLUNK-KLUNK" was all I heard, as they dropped to the internal reject cup.

Fistfull.. if they went into the internal reject cup were they counted in the value?
I wouldnt say that machine accepts them if they were actually rejected.

More importantly.. did you get them back?

Well, I went into the bank I had been told about and talked to the head teller and she said it wouldn't be a problem at all! She also told me that it was the first time anyone had asked as far as she knew which was good news for me too. If I'm the only one doing it than I know that much more that I'm not re-searching through what another bag hunter searched. Still means I may be searching through someone else's box searching rejects though which I hadn't considered before... hmmm...

On a BWR note however, I told her my son and I were putting together sets of ATB and Sac and Pres dollar sets and she offered that if I come in during slow times (she told me what days and times are best) they would be willing to rummage through their dollar rolls and check them against my list and sell me rolls that I don't have yet so that's cool! I asked about old money and coins that get dropped off and she said she's got a pretty good collection from the bank but if I just peeked at everyone's counter trays and saw anything, they had to sell it to me at face value.

Lastly, just a story she shared. They had a little old lady come through a few days ago and just needed money and tried to bring in over 100 Morgan and Peace dollars for face value. They actually took the time to explain to her that they were FAR more valuable than a dollar a piece and convinced her to take them to a dealer for more money. Integrity right there! Good on them I say!

Good luck and search on!

I just came back to say that I just got skunked on a bank bag of quarters today. Not one interesting thing in there, not even a Chuck E Cheese token. Pretty sure this was someone else's dump. The CRH Gods did not appreciate my hubris.
