At what point are you spending more on the coins you cant find in rolls ,than the whole albums worth?

It's worth whatever you feel it's worth, between the cost of materials and coins and time involved to assemble it all. If it makes you happy, it's worth all the money in the world.

I keep asking the same thing. Just don't know what to do with excessive Albums, 2x2's, rolls, etc. Forexample I'm just finishing up Album #12 of Mercury dimes. 10 of Lincoln Cents, and this goes on and on and on and on............
How does anyone stop?

Raymo, you should easily be able to assemble most of the silver Roosevelts through roll hunting. I've assembled two folders easily in a year or two roll hunting dimes. I'm short 5 and 6 spots though in both, and have many duplicates.

I never have any luck finding silver. I did my Jeff's going through box after box and never did find a War Nickel or even a buff. Not sure I wanna deal with a small coin like a dime is. It definitely would be cheaper lol.

Well, they key to finding silver is searching volume. I found about 350+ Roosevelts, but had to search $50,000+ in dimes, sounds like a lot, but not really.

As far as roll hunting goes, believe me, I'm not really sure it's cheaper, but it is fun!

Sure its cheaper...and for sure fun. Its a nice way to add to your hobby. Fill most of the holes and buy the rest. I always enjoy the hunt and the thrill of actually finding something. :-)

Well...I drive a Ford F150. On my day off, I roll hunt. I might average 50 miles driving to pickup coin, (lets say $2k worth). Another 25 miles to dump that day. That's 75 miles total one day, @ $3.90 gal gasoline. My truck averages 15 mpg highway. Thats's just under $20 worth of gas. So, I have to find 10 silver dimes from that $2k that I searched, just to break even. Well, lately I haven't even been breaking even lol...

To answer the original question... I think it becomes too much when you no longer enjoy what you're doing. I've been a collector for most of my life, but there have been several time where I have slowed or stopped for a little while. If you don't moderate anything, you stand a good chance of becoming that next subject on the show "Hoarders." ')

...Coin Hoarders, that might make a great show !

Sadly I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to Indian head pennies.

When I started this discussian I was talking more about the price of the coins you cant seem to find and end up buying ,but like Fistfulladirt I did figure in the trip into town to the banks 18 miles ,18 back home ,thats 2 gallons of gas.I usually get 30 to 40 rolls of nickels a day ,go through them keep the real nice ones (keys) maybe 5 to 10 coins then take the rest back.During the winter months I do that almost every day the banks open.. I enjoy all that ,it gives me something to do all winter ..Now in a week or so when this weather breaks I'll put the coins away and start Bass fishing all year till next winter..

There is no shame and giving up the hunt to buy the last (few) coin(s) you need to finish an album. Whatever makes you happiest, whether it is the hunt or the completed set.
