I love toning, and found all sorts of types. My favorite is the electric blue toned nickels I have have found. Hard to show on camera, but when tilted toward the light you can see concentric rings of blue

A consistent, even patina on a coin is very pleasing to my eye. Some degree of toning on older coins is almost a requirement. The lack of it suggests that someone has most likely been messing with it.

I just found a very nice toned 1964 nickel, rainbow colored almost. I kept it because I have never seen anything like it.

I have 3 Dansco albums with 8 pages (20 holes each page) that I keep all of my unusual, toned, plated, ounterstamped, PMD, stickered, melted, etc halves I find in. The albums weren't cheap and that is $80 face per album tied up in coins that are worth only $80 but I enjoy looking at them and wondering where they've been and what they've been through.

In general I do not like toning on coins, but I have been awed by some of the tremendous colors and patterns toned coins have. If I see one that just blows me away, I keep it.

Since I postd this, I have found two toned coins I decided to keep. Maybe I am coming around to the idea of toned = nice?

I keep them, put them in flips and have a box of toned coins. Found 4 toned nickels in the last box I searched.

Some toned coins are very beautiful, but they are damaged coins,so I dont understand why people pay big bucks for them.

If a coin has natural toning, I dont see how.it is damaged. Artifical toning, I absolutley agree they are damaged. I keep toned coins that appeal to me andsell those that I think will appeal to others. I also keep a.collection of PMD coins that fasinate me.

I agree with everyone who likes them... I actually definitely prefer a colorfully toned coin over a blast white one.. and will absolutely pay a premium for one I like. But there's a difference to me between brown/black (ugly) toning compared to rainbow colors, either single colors alone or actually a rainbow together... Colors yes... Ugly no... Unless its on a very very old coin I would expect to find it on.
How is toning damage? I agree with GoldenChest, but I'd have to say that even if it was made in an artificial manner then I'd still call it altered more than damaged. I wouldn't pay a premium for an artificially toned one but do own a few that I like. Toning is a completely natural process that happens to metals when mixed with natural elements found on every millimeter in this world. So again, how is that damage if its a naturally occuring process? There's really no way to completely stop toning, delay it sure.. But one day all coins will tone... Like it or not, lol.
