It does have a proof appearance, but the rims don't say proof to me. The rest of the look does. Tough one, I think proof is probably correct. But I'd want another proof in hand to examine side by side and look for any die markers that would conclusively tell.

I should have kept original PCGS grade MS65. Was new into coins and most told me it would grade better. Next grading came back in flip as MS environment damage. Now slabbed as proof 65. Seen many other Lib nickels that were MS now regraded proof. Seems to be a trend.

Amazing, amazing coin! I think I read that the proofs are more common in that year than the high end mint state 'business addition' coins. The idea was that those people who collected coins back then, would simply buy the proofs, and the to be circulated coins were not saved. The demand for the business edition coins did not come until many years later. Although this could have been referring to he Shield nickel series. Edited by Bababooey

Just goes to show you how often the grading companies can't even agree with themselves. Like my 1885-CC cracked from a MS64, to a bagged, to a MS63, then a bagged, then sold raw, and finally in the MS65 holder it deserved all along, I spent almost $170.00 in grading fees and postage only to sell it at a loss to a client that submitted it back to PCGS, he got the grade not me. I'd love to see how PCGS would have handled the value reimbursement. 1885 MS65 is worth, what 10000. 1885 PR66 cameo is probably about 3000. You can't keep it in the MS holder, it would be cheating someone one day out of a lot of money. |
