I have a microscope but sometimes hold a magnifying glass to the end of my digital camera and get better results.

Thanks Kuh, I will have a look , just seems like a waste since I'm not a variety searcher or collector. At Coin Chick thanks also.. I tried that but no luck....

If this coin was from say Beltzberg , or Pittman or any other huge name the coin would simply be accepted..tell me I'm wrong
You're wrong. If Pittman was on here people would take a bite out of his ass. As Pittman, MORE would be expected of him than simply claiming it was fact because CCCS put it on a slab. We see this a lot on here. Someone insisting they have something rare and valuable, and getting frustrated when people don't immediately agree. Simple tenant: Extraordinary claims need extraordinary proof. I trust you realize you are making an extraordinary claim.

dialog, I am not the only one who sees this for what it is.. In fact it was shown to quite a few well versed collectors and all say same thing.. Louis has I believe another person also who verifies coins before slabbing, so again more than one set of eyes...Also another grading firm said they would grade it but only if Charlton put it in the book first ? even though they could see it.. And yes but from day 1 when I first posted this months ago I asked that all collectors look and check for this coin... I have done my due diligence so what else can I do.. Its not up to me to prove it exists as I have 1, but for other collectors to start searching....And on another note.. ALL varieties have to start with 1 , until others are searched well I have 1 so others can start now ...

It looks like my 1558/1858, for the "8" over 5 at least. I could see mine in a lot on ebay even tho it came back AG-3 from ICCS. Yours can be easily seen for me. In your next life you could simply say, hey guys I found a 1858 with the first 8/5 showing only the 18 and people would just and say how nice it is and easy to see ;). Question for you. Is the A doubled like for the 1858?

That 8 over 5 looks good to me. An interesting fact is the 1870 minting came directly after the 1858 minting---the same technique for a repair job in the same era.

As far as the Province of Canada 10c reverse punch was concerned, the 1870 coinage wasn't exactly the next one for which it saw use. The same punch (with the 58 ground off) was used for the New Brunswick 10c of 1862-64.
What would really help with the attribution of the 1870 piece, of course, would be for a better condition piece to turn up. Until then you could be facing an uphill battle for its acceptance because of how much the detail of digits and letters can be distorted by the wear and tear of circulation.

Sid... This 1870 is damaged ( PMD), the tops of the 1, 8 and 7 are all damaged, flattened. The 8 is not a 8/5 but has been damaged in two places, giving it little "horns". In fact, the tops of C, E and N are all damaged similarly. The 8 in this coin looks nothing like a 8/5 or THE 8/5 in the 1858 dime. Louis (CCCS) has made a mistake certifying this coin. I think a much better approach, would have been to search for a 2nd example in EF, AU or MS, for confirmation, and only THEN present the find. Claiming a new variety on a severely damaged G6 graded coin, is a bad idea. There are thousands of severely damaged Victorian coins floating around making it appear like there are any possible combinations of overpunched numbers or letters, when in reality, they are simply damaged coins.

Here is a close-up of my 1858 8/5 (CCCS AU55), for comparison purposes. With all the damage on your coin aside, the "horns" on top of the 8 in your 1870, are in the wrong place, for there to be an underlying 5. Also the top loop of the 8 in your 1870 is not partially filled like the 8/5 in the 1858.

After checking carefully mine(1858). I can tell ou that the left "horn" is exactly the same as mine. I mean exactly, the right one is not exactly at the same spot.
Keep in mind that this isn't the same year so perhaps it was slighty different.
Also I don't think Louis would take it and in 5 secs attribute that 8 over 5. My guess is he must have check it VERY VERY carefully for some time and weight the possibly that it is simply fom damage.
As for the filling on mine we can't say they are really one. It's AG after all...
My question to the owner of that 1870 was to see if the observe had the same doubled "A" in the last "A" of Canada.

The perils of collecting these sorts of Varieties is akin to walking on jello. Shaky at best. Disastrous at worst. Unless someone finds one of these so called rarities for a song , it is folly to pay a huge premium to buy one. There are far more solid ways to spend money on coins. Just asking if you had ten grand to spend"........... Would you buy a well worn dime in a so called TPG holder that is or is not a true rarity or say put the same amount into a solid selection of Gem mint state Victorian or Edwardian type coins? I know where I would go or recommend my clients to put the money, and it would not be the dime. If you are going to buy coins , with an eye to LONG TERM growth buy track proven Quality pieces. If you are going to buy coins for a fun hobby , roll search, junk bin surf, and search for obscure varieties,( cherry pick) , Do not lay out large for obscure unproven material , you will regret it down the road. Wierd varieties can be in vogue one week and no one cares the next.
