Well that certainly 'floats my boat' ! Anything 1st century is a big plus but when you combine it with a tough Emperor you really have something special. I wonder if it wasn't cut from some sort of plaque or other type of decorative panel. I know how you feel watching something 'good' tick down to zero. And the thrill when all the searching through thousands of items finally pays off.

It could have been a plaque. I dont know why that would be made though. Perhaps its a souvenir from the mint for a soldier who served in Galbas army - then, when they retired and settled in Croydon they buried it to hide their previous infidelity. Perhaps theres more stuff out there - a detector might do well in that garden.
I hope its nice. I'm going to work out how to mount it. I'm thinking an acrylic stand.

Very interesting! Looking forward to hearing what the experts have to say.
Chris, can I have some of your popcorn while we wait? :-)

I can't make up my mind about this piece. If it was mine, I would submit it to the British Museum Coins and Medals Department for an opinion. That would be an almost a 'no brainer' for me, if I were living in the U.K.

I might take it to them or send it in. I've got a few coins for them to look at. Depends what the guys at the PAS place say. If they say its an outright fake, then I wont bother.
The seller is also throwing in another roman thing from the same bucket of scrap, but from the description it must be fake. I hope this isn't also fake.
And ddaaaamn, thats a lot of popcorn.

LOL Chris, what a picture! College kid in his dorm room with ten pounds of popcorn? Must be a bad case of the munchies.

Arrived. Going to the local Finds Liason Officer on tuesday (hopefully) - I'm taking it to a local historian later today to see if they can make sense of it. The other coin it came with is afake as you like but I'm still feeling hopeful. Beautifully preserved - shiny fields. The sheet of lead was cut with sheers. the ridges around the design which slightly intersect do not seem to be part of the die - rather, it seems someone wanted to cut it out. Slightly worrying, but perhaps it was just for show. Seems it took a pounding - flattened out the top of the design without touching the fields. Perhaps it was defaced - thatwould lend o the die trial idea. Galba is looking good and two of the soldier's faces are still extant. Lovely thing - looks like its going to be hard to mount for display though. Not that that will be happening any time soon with the places it will be going (Unless someone can tell me unequivocably that its a modern fake).

I havent found a single modern reproduction of this coin on record. Theres a Paduan medal which is the same but bears the inscription ADLOCVT (The IO is dropped).
I havent found many good images of examples (just 2 seperate examples) but both are from different dies and neither is a die match. The variation between them is enough to allow for the variation on this one (Ive been concentrating on the position of the standards).
Im trying to get in touch with the local FLO to have them take a look. The local museum said that they visit there 2nd saturday of each month, but thats ages away. Ill phone FLO and see where they are next, then I'm going to the British museum with the thing - perhaps ill be able to compare it to another example, if the BM holds one.
