Quote: I have to play devils advocate here, they are his coins and if he wants to sell I say go for it. You can play devils advocate all want, but this is what he asked in his original post: Quote: So I'm sure there is no right age to begin coin collecting but recently I came in possession of my grandfathers old coin collection and I found a few coins that I know are special. I just dont know how special and I was wondering if anyone can help me out or give me advice or guidance. ......and what he is getting is advise and guidance, the exact answers he asked for. Had he joined the forum and stated that he got some coins from a relative, he has no interest in them what so ever, they have absolutely zero sentimental value, " I just want the cash ", then he would be getting different answers. There is nothing wrong with answering the question asked, you gave your guidance, everyone else gave their advise and guidance.

And why anyone on this forum would give advice to a question like this is beyond me. The OP's question changed very fast from should I get these graded to I need some cash.

Quote: This forum, CCF, is headed in the wrong direction. Quote: And why anyone on this forum would give advice to a question like this is beyond me. The OP's question changed very fast from should I get these graded to I need some cash. It seems as if that's the advice they are giving - to sell or not, with good reasons on both sides. In the end, of course, it's up to the OP. They've also given an answer on whether to grade or not: 'It's not worth the grading fees' seems to be the general consensus. A little expansion on your comments might allow your meaning to be clearer. I'm a little confused about what you were trying to say.

this thread is getting rather twisted! As soon as Grandad was mentioned everyone seemed to go into save it for your last meal mode. It seems he wants to sell them and the only advice he's getting is never even think about that. I'd wait for silver price to raise before selling. Quote: old coin collection and I found a few coins Correct me if I'm wrong but that seems to imply that Kroseph33 has more than just those 5. So he would not be liquidating the entire collection. If those are the only 5 coins then yes please hold onto them. I personally hoard, I do not sell silver so I would not part with mine till it was last meal time. We have given tons of advice here, I hope some of it is good. If he wants to sell and has good reasons for it but only gets negative feedback to his ideas then it's more brow-beating than advice. I say Don't sell now, everyone else seems to be in the don't sell ever camp. Then again I've always been the odd one out .

Quote: but (if he) only gets negative feedback to his ideas then it's more brow-beating than advice what was the negative feedback that is equating to brow beating? this man posed a question, shared a story and got some different input from different sources. Forget "why" he should do what any of us are advising and focus on the simple facts of his questions: A) is what I have special and extra valuable? No, it is not. B) Should I send these in to get graded, is that worth it? No, it is not. Nice little collection of coins you've got there, best of luck whatever direction you travel with them

I would get them away from the black foam, it won't do them any good. Keep them all.

I can't say I'm particularly happy with the direction this thread has taken. Advice is advice, and in case you've been ignoring your mirror lately, advice that disagrees with your opinion is more important to you than it is to the person asking the question; if you're going to take someone to task in public for offering an opinion then you've grown too large for your britches. Thank you for offering this stellar picture as someone's first impression of Coin Community.

Kroseph33, The 1942-D Mercury dime is circulated, and only worth $2 to $3. If you tried to sell it, you would get less, basically silver melt value. The 1945 Walking Liberty half dollar looks suspect, like it may have been cleaned, and possibly polished. It's really hard to tell from your photos, but if either are true, the value would be significantly affected. The 1904 Barber half dollar has original color, and is very nice (don't clean or polish it!). I would grade it Very Good-8, which would value it at about $21. The 1886 Morgan dollar looks like it could be a high-grade uncirculated specimen. If so, it is easily the best value in the group.

Look,
As much as we would appreciate that he keep them as a tribute, it is not our place to convince him. He asked for help in selling and that is our task to offer HELP! No more, no less.

When looking at selling common silver coins, the spot price is germane because you aren't likely to get much OVER IT for them. Since silver is at like $21.50/ounce or so - after being in the $30-$40 range for a long time, this isn't the greatest time to unload silver coins, IMO. I'd definitely keep the Morgan dollar - since dollars are at a premium and that one looks UNC. The rest I'd at least wait for silver prices to rebound and then go to a local show ( many have monthly shows nearby ) and sell them to the highest offerer. That is what I plan on doing with my "junk silver" when the price gets to my "desired spot". May take 5-10 years though.

Quote:I'll make this simple for you and give you the answer to your burning question: Barber half $45 Walking half $20 Morgan dollar $50 Mercury dimes $8 for both on a good day I might be off by 10% on the total give or take Keep the coins, remember your grandad through them and one day perhaps by the grace and favor of God, you're grand kids will be holding them as well and that my friend is priceless Best of luck I have some coins I want you to buy, especially at ultra-inflated prices like that. Barber half $15 Walking half $8 Morgan dollar $35 Mercury dimes $5 Now that is more like it. To the original poster, if you want to sell, I would highly recommend ebay, you might be able to find a bidiot to inflate those prices.
