great idea for a smackdown! this coin of elagablaus has a star atop mount argaeus on the reverse.   and this coin of the bactrian king antialcidas features the caps of the dioscuri on the reverse, topped by stars. castor and pollux were transformed into the constellation gemini by zeus....pictured on the obverse. I have been a somewhat elusive member as of late, but don't think I wont come out swinging... Kingdom of Elam King Kamnaskires VI Late 1st cent BC to early 1st century AD Billon Tetradrachm 16.10g x 29mm obv: diademed bust of king right, tamgha and crescent star rev: male bust left with garbled legend ref: Seaby 5889 Some have thought that this might be one of those "three wise men" from the east the observed a celestial event and subsequently followed the event which lead them to the a manger in Israel sometime around 4 BC. Its a stretch. The coin is one of the best of the type have seen.  A pleasing coin from the declining Seleucid Empire. This coin was minted under the reign of Antiochus VIII Epiphanes Grypos (the hooked nose). 121-96 BC. The coin features a photo realistic diademed portrait of the King surrounded by a fillet border. The reverse, of exceptional style IMHO, features what some call Zeus, or Zeus Ouranios. Which I believe to be the Titan Uranus, or titan/god of the sky. He features a crescent headdress and in his outstretched hand a star. (really phat). Antiochus VIII 121-96 BC Antioch, Syria AR Tetradrachm 30.5 mm x 16.12 grams struck. 121-113 BC Obverse: Diademed bust of Antiochus VIII right. Reverse: Uranus Standing left arm outstretched holding a star, and scepter crecent headdress IE/A left field, K right, N in Exergue. BASILEWS / ANTIOXOY right EPIPhANOYZ left field. Here`s one of my coins from the "vault"   Obv: Bust of Vijayasena w/ Saka date and corrupted Greek Rev: Brahmi inscription w/ three-arched hill, sun, and moon. Not too astrological but fits the bill. |

I'll post mine up even though it doesn't really stand up to the other ones in this thread. I claim some bonus points for having cleaned it though! It does have a sun on the reverse.  (A Miletos, Ionian coin that I cleaned, with a clear portrait on the front and a malformed lion on the back. Minted 2nd century BC.) |

sap, it was a great idea for a smackdown, I'm surprised at the low turn out. I think there are more coins out there that would have been applicable, there were several I've seen here that I thought would show up. anyway, here's my votes..
bronze:chuy's ionian...point for self cleaning.
silver:DTM's vijahayasena
gold: AN's kingodom of elam..what a cool coin.

well, i'll congratulate myself...nice job chrsmat71.  good idea for a smackdown sap...there were tons of possible coin that could have been posted here..not sure why the tepid response. I don't think there's really any point in doing another one, if folks are interested i'll do a next...if not, that's ok also. |

I was really impressed with some of the entries but didn't know if it was appropriate to vote if I submitted. I like the concept and it's nice to have a reason to dig some coins out for appreciation they might not get otherwise, both from our own and people that see them. Maybe leave voting open a week so more people see it?

Well done chrsmat71 ;-). I am sorry I did not enter or vote on this one. Was a decent idea for a smackdown have just been really busy. Think you should keep it going, will try to make sure I post/vote on the next one if you do.
