I think dimes aren't exactly low denomination coins. Ten of them make a dollar. Plus, it's worth this much where I come from (image from wikipedia): Yes, that's 3 zeroes on the coin. The current biggest circulating coin denomination, only slightly bigger than a quarter in size. At least it's half the weight of the old thick bimetallic one. No one wants holes in their purse, wallet or pocket, don't they? I guess being the one of the smallest coins in circulation, people often lose them. I've never paid enough attention before to sidewalks, guess I should start. Maybe I'll strike gold (literally and not literally ) Amazing find! Too bad 20p is one of the coins that I know I won't find in Canadian rolls. I guess I'll only have this fairly worn '87. I like the lion in the 10p coin too, but I think it looks too plain. It would look better if the lion was a little bigger. Just wondering, are 20p rolls 7-sided like the coin? Or are they still round?

Quote: I've never paid enough attention before to sidewalks, guess I should start you should , at first I also didnt pay much attention until a few summers ago then I started picking coins up as a dare to see how much I could pull up in a few months and now........well , lets just say my piggy bank is very heavy ! The strange thing is that on wet , rainy days I seem to find high denomination coins .... Quote: I like the lion in the 10p coin too, but I think it looks too plain. Yes ! . The funny thing about those 10p coins is that thanks to the success of the Royal Canadian Mint`s ARP The Royal Mint over here has started a similar programme and those 10p coins have almost vanished from circulation ... Quote: Just wondering, are 20p rolls 7-sided like the coin? Or are they still round? We dont use rolls over here instead you get bags of coins ...since the coins must be a specific weight the bank just sticks them in a bag , weighs them and hands them over and the reverse occurs when you take coins to the bank .....

Guess what, I just found a 5p in a dime roll too! You know when you just unwrap a roll and se the sides? I thought, "Hang on, that's no dime, it's too thick!" I pulled it out, and it's a 1990 5p! I also got a 1p from the bank (along with a 1945 and 1967 penny, a Russian coin and an unknown middle Eastern one). The teller was really nice and he showed me the tray where they put coins in. Strangely, it is quite pink, with a hint of circulation cameo on reverse! Perhaps their change is quite slippery on rainy days, and they don't bother picking it up either because it's muddy. The only shiny thing so far I've seen on a sidewalk is a soda can pull-to-open tab thing. Poor old design coins. I wonder what Ironside is thinking about the ARP? Are the steel ones being melted down too? If they are sold by weight, then might there not be more or less of the coin in the bag since they can get worn down or get something stuck on them or something?

Well done on finding that 1990 5p and the penny ! What year is the penny from ? Quote: Are the steel ones being melted down too? No, they are removing the cupronickel 5p and 10p coins (pre-2011)from circulation and they are replacing them with thicker nickel plated steel ones .....which seem to be everywhere at the moment , every store I visit I see tills filled with the new shiny nickel plated steel coins

It's from 1988, so it's still copper! Had it found its way to The Royal Mint it would be melted, wouldn't it? Oh well, if they don't have much intrinsic value, at least they're shiny! I wonder when the shield design ones will make their way here? The newest pence I've seen here is 2007 (but it was from a human not a roll so I did cheat a bit).

Quote: It's from 1988 so it's still copper! Awesome Ironically 3 days ago I picked up a 1988 penny abandoned in the city .... Quote:Had it found its way to The Royal Mint it would be melted, wouldn't it? no,its only the cupronickel 5p and 10p coins that are being withdrawn; they have left the old pennies and 2p coins still in circulation which is a nice consolation Hopefully some shield coins will escape and make their way across to you guys, the funny thing is I have heard of quite a few British coins making their way into Canada but very very few Canadian coins turn up here ......the only Canadian coin I got in circulation is a copper plated steel penny a few years back and I am glad I kept that penny !

Aww, poor penny. I hope you find it a good home That's nice! I'm not sure about copper being melted here, but I hope not (my hopes aren't high though, since there are practically no George Vs in circulation). I've grown quite attached to pennies with Bertie's head on them. Just to sidetrack a bit, I just watched The King's Speech last Thursday, and when I got to the swearing scene I really had to re-watch Chains from Blackadder II I guess people there from the UK see Canadian coins as a rarity, just like how Canadians see UK coins Hopefully more make their way there Might it be because there less more Canadian people coming to the UK than the other way around? I have a teacher from the UK, and another teacher that taught in the UK (and be called a lumberjack there, no he's not a lumberjack!) then came back.

Quote: I hope you find it a good home I sure did - were I used to keep sweets , its one of my favorite foreign coins Yeah , there must be more traffic from UK TO Canada than in the opposite direction which might explain the situation ...

Maybe if I can ever go to the UK sometime in the future I'll bring several Canadian coins with me and "drop" them in random places for people to find

Quote: Maybe if I can ever go to the UK sometime in the future I'll bring several Canadian coins with me and "drop" them in random places for people to find It`s funny you say that because this afternoon I picked up an abandoned Canadian dime .....I am so exited , when I first saw it I thought it was another one of our 5p coins which I find abandoned quite a lot, then on seeing the words Canada I knew I had hit pay dirt .....then pay dirt went to an all new level when I saw its date .....1978 I remembered what you said about the dimes being a bit too thin , so I put it beside one of our new plated steel 5p coins and I couldnt believe how thin your Canadian dimes are ! They look anorexic compared to our thick 5p coins ......

Wow! That's a 34 year old coin! Amazing find It's not even that easy to find coins that old in rolls here. It's steel, steel, and steel again. I've also found an Australian 5 cent pretending to be a nickel in a roll. It doesn't really matter though, it's quite cute It's amazing how coins can travel around the world! I've always been wondering, what surreal tale can it tell us only if it could speak? Who knows, it might have seen a real-life Blackadder-esque event I needed to get used to how thin dimes were too when I came here. They feel too small and thin. I used to keep dropping them. Even now I'm not a fan of them. Its size is ridiculous. In Indonesia current circulating coins are mostly aluminium, so they can be quite thick but still very light. So light it's a bit like plastic if you ask me. At least it's not too heavy instead like the "yellow" version coins make holes in your pocket is a recurring joke Also saw some pre-decimal copper today, my firsts (also saw a £1 and a £2, but they aren't as interesting). A teacher of mine owns a few, mostly pennies of George Vs with worn smooth Brittanias. Unfortunately they haven't been stored properly and had started to corrode green... There was also a small thick not round brass coin, apparently it's pronounced "thrup-ny bit" That really doesn't roll off my tongue. I haven't found any coins on the sidewalk (but I saw a crushed plastic bottle cap today) but I've been having lucky streaks with banks lately. I wonder, is it because of the silver sixpence I bought? It seems too improbable for all of them to be a coincidence Maybe it's more than just a superstition?

Yeah its amazing the interesting places coins end up getting to , everytime I get coins from the 70`s or 80`s I always wonder were they have been to over the years and how many sweets they have bought One thing that also surprised me about Canadian dimes is the fact that your newer steel dimes are lighter than the ones from the 70`s and 80`s , its interesting that you mention dropping dimes because when that dime slipped and dropped to a hard surface in a quiet room it mde a soft sound so I can imagine people dropping one in a place were there is a little noise wont hear them ...... Quote: I haven't found any coins on the sidewalk (but I saw a crushed plastic bottle cap today) My top tip would be pay a little attention to areas near parking meters , they are good places to find interesting coins

I got two 1991 5 pence pieces a while back in US dime rolls, and just got a 6 pence from 1954 in a US penny roll. I always love finding foreign coins, that is how I started THREE decades ago, the US coins never appealed to me and my dad asked at his bank all the time for NON-US coins and I ended up with hundreds that way. Quote:I always wonder were they have been to over the years and how many sweets they have bought Quote: I've always been wondering, what surreal tale can it tell us only if it could speak? I started a Thread a while back just for that purpose, "A Coin's Life" https://goccf.com/t/168956 It's not a dead topic but just in hibernation. If you feel like being creative you can give that 5 pence a voice... from Royal Mint to your hand... where has it been? ? ?

Yep. And most of the place I'm in are carpeted. Mutes out the sound more. If they decided to make the dime lighter, say out of aluminium, I bet that they will go flying on a windy day (if my calculations are correct it will weigh only 0.8410173 grams). Then dimes will be flying everywhere, smacking people in the face as they walk by... Unfortunately, there aren't any parking meters around my area. I could see how they would be a good spot to find coins though Keep that sixpence Aslan! I bought a '42 sixpence that I carry around, and I've been having multiple streaks of luck lately. I probably overpaid for it but I'm certain it's paid itself back very quick with all this luck I'll think up of something a little over-the-top styled to add to your thread for a little change from the sentimental stories I need to practice my writing I've no motivation to work on Legacy for a long time... Still stuck on Chapter 4
