A nice example of Sheldon-174, (I believe). R-2. Small spine atop 1. The reverse and obverse bearing clash marks below chin and at fraction.
Nice average surfaces, VF20/VF25 condition, no corrosion or pits. A few minor scratches on obverse and an edge nick which is not too terrible yield a net grade of F15. Definitely a nice large cent.

A decent VF-20 coin with only minor issues.

VF-20
I think that the rim bumps will not get it a details grade.

Real decent! Minor scratches and rim bump at obv. 6 oclock and rim nick at rev. 8 oclock. Net grade around VG10 or F12. Who knows what a TPG would grade it and frankly who cares.

Congratulations on buying this one! I think the scratches are not a problem but the reverse rim nick might be a problem for a TPG. I don't slab old copper so - just give it a big hug for all of us!

I would also go F15. 300 is a good price. I would pay that in a heartbeat.

Received the coin yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised as to how light, old and toned over the scratches are. And the rim bump does not go very deep. Here is a better pic of how the obverse looks in hand. And a side shot of the rim bump: I am thinking it will slab problem free VF if I send it to ANACS.

Hi Dave. Well, it was $308 shipped, but I usually factor in the 2% ebay bucks into the deal. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1798-VF-Lar...p=true&rt=ncCan you guys give me some inputs on your value estimates? I realize that there are certified auction results....but after taking into account all of these minor issues, I'm not really sure what a reasonable value is. This is far from my area of expertise, as I have only owned several draped bust cents. I intend to sell it eventually, as this is a filler for my type set right now until I can find/afford an AU, or very high end XF.

I'd say VF-20 Details. You did really well for $300.

Like the new pics. Looking at this again I bump it from my original F15 to VF20. Nice pickup

Since you are interested in knowing the value of this nice cent - I asked myself the question how much would I pay? (and I collect large cents).
My answer was in the $ 350-500 (max) range. It is a nice coin, with some problems admittedly - but they are not that serious imho. The main reason I did not go higher is that S-174 is a R-2 coin, that is, not very scarce, and that is an important factor in the pricing of early copper.
