OK, so your need (at the diameter) is for a Half. It is not unreasonable to find a Half well over 100 years old for less than $100 - worn Bust Halves from the 1820's-1830's can be had for that. If condition is relevant to your plot, Franklins in Uncirculated grades and even some Walking Liberty halves will fit the bill. So, your options are broader than you might think, and hopefully that'll make the storytelling easier for you.

Also, again with the timeframe, a 1964 Kennedy (90% silver), 1965-1970 (40% silver) or bicentennial 1776-1976 (clad only) version might fit the bill. Those are easily found, more in the $10 and under range.

Melt - just the value of the silver - on the 64s, Franklins and Walking Liberties are $6.42 today, the Kennedy 40% is at $2.62

An inch in diameter would be a quarter (24mm = .95"). Halves are 31mm (1.2" and dollars are 38mm = 1.5")

For a $50-100 quarter, many of the early dates of Standing Liberty quarter series would be of that value, even in lower quality (such as when kept in a pocket). And they are a silver coin.

I would go with the 3 cent US Silver Coin! Under 100 and not a $ coin. Its unique!

Susan B Anthony proof. 26mm (0.6mm > 1 inch) $1 face value. Easily obtainable for less than $10, maybe even face at a bank if lucky. Also there is a rare one, an '81 clear S (type 2) worth about a hundred even circulated.

If it's a pocket piece, I would use a 1976-S uncirculated Ike 40% silver dollar. They are cheap and plentiful.

Well now that you have established that a half dollar will work and it needs to be under $100 you have opened up a whole new world. Look on e-bay and you may be surprised to learn for that money you can get a bust half. Think of the story you could build around a coin nearly 200 years old.

I hope the link works. Even if it is just a coin something like this could bring something a bit different that a common Franklin or Kennedy half.

We have a winner. The Barber half dollar seems perfect for what I'm looking for. I'll see if I can find one for reference somewhere to confirm.

Thanks.

Excellent. The specific example pictured above by wheatchaser140 (date, mint mark, grade) can be had for less than $100, as can a large percentage of Barber halves in similar condition.

And if you're not happy with the Barber half dollar, may I suggest the Seated Liberty half dollar (1839-1891). There were many common years/mint marks where millions of the coin type were minted, thus mostly inexpensive.

This 1878 was $52:

Does it have "character"? I vote: YES!

An 1861-O Confederate struck Half would be a much more interesting pocket piece.

I paid $60 for mine.

There is a half dollar that may fit into your writing and quite honestly add an extra layer for your book in many ways. A worn bust half dollar could also work in a story of a modern metro area for a character who has a family hand be down coin. Besides a hand me down piece a writer could think up a rather juicy side story that might fit with the characters character.

Plus this is a very old coin examples for less that $100 in rough condition date back over 180 years to the pre-civil war era.

Take a look at the like provided to see if this would work for you.
