OK, I totally could NOT see that on the phone. That looks like a halo of... I dont know what. Lighter colored gunk? PVA residue? Just weird.

This caliber of a coin would require a problem-free TPG certification for me to take a second glance.

If one considers that Guatemala Hoard coins were cleaned with an abrasive cleanser, I'm thinking that cleaner wasn't entirely removed from the surfaces nearest the devices. It acquired a different patina all its' own in the last 60 years, not necessarily through the usual toning process. Whatever it is, I wouldn't touch this one with stolen money.

I see what you're talking about now. I can't tell what that is either but it does look suspicious. Thanks guys, another learning experience for me.

The coin is beautiful. The price...not so much. If I found this coin in my collection, I'd have a hard time letting go of it. That is, unless you were offering what the seller is asking!

Yeah, those were in the detail images from the auction. From a distance, it's a pretty coin. Close up? Not so much.

That looks like an antique finish where the background is black and the features polished/light to make them stand out

To my eye, not a great looking coin, especially for over $1,000. If you want better value, try this coin: We're getting a little tired of you plugging this dealer. Yes, he's a great numismatist, but this is the third time in your 16 posts here that we've had to edit this same dealer out. And since this thread is about silver Seated halves and you linked a gold coin, it's obvious you're only here to plug that dealer. Don't do it again.

Not for that polished coin.
If it were an 1856-S or 1872-cc maybe.

As a final comment on this topic, I would stay away from this coin...it looks to be afflicted with problematic surfaces. It's best to strive for coins with original surfaces, the way they came from the mint, and not doctored along the way. Good luck!

If the seller has been a collector and shop owner for 55 years as he says, he's not a collector/dealer I'd want to do business with. He knows exactly what that coin is. And isn't. Makes me wonder how many of those 987 positive feedbacks are from people he's taken advantage of.

I have a Seated quarter that kind of looks like that. Think I only paid $25 for it I'll see if I can post the picture tonight

Well, yes it has problems and as such I wouldn't go near that ask, but I still think it's a pretty coin, personally. Then again, every coin can be pretty - if it's the right price! ; )
