I'm also lost here. If you pay $28 for $15.50 worth of silver, you're paying substantially more than melt. Your cost is $28, in theory and in practice.

Quote:I agree that preppers/stackers know that, but Joe and Jose may need convincing that those old quarters are worth more than twenty-five cents a piece if clad is all they have ever known. The 5 pc. silver State Quarter proof set speaks for itself. It is in original government packaging as shipped from the San Francisco Mint with a Certificate of Authenticity. I need 500 state proofs sets by next week.

I'm an accountant and if I used the same math on this thread to do my work I think I would get in trouble.

If I had 5 really dirty and smelly Pigs and then traded them for 3 clean and shiny Pigs, who got the best deal?

Okay, forget all that. It boils down to you deciding how to use your financial resources for the greatest benefit to yourself. You can tie up your money by setting aside junk silver as dead money or put it to work for you while achieving the same purpose you wanted 90% for in the first place. (a) Five Junk Silver Quarters. If you pay a premium to purchase, they are instantly worth less. They will always be worth current melt value. (b) 5 pc. Proof Silver Quarter Set. If you purchase below Blue Book, they are instantly worth more. They will always be worth current Red Book.

To me something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Maybe you will get Red Book price maybe not.

Hey I am not doubting your logic as all I have always collected for the most part is Proof coins and .9999 sivler and .9999 gold bullion, but for us Canadians, atm , we cant buy those sets your talking about as cheap as you can but ya I would perfer those over junk anyday but anyways I guess its anyones guess what will be better to have down the road, junk 90% or the higher priced semi junk cheap proofs.

@Rookie, you could probably find better than 15x face. I am lucky to have a place that sells it to me about 10x face (and mostly Barber coinage too) but usually on the forum I see people talking 12-14x face. 15 seems a tad high

@Rookie cards - right now the value of 90% US coin melt is 13 X face. You will be hard pressed to find anyone selling at this price. Lately, there have been high premiums over spot. 14 x face can easily be found online, sold by vendors such as Provident Metals.

An Australian experience on silver: Went to a public coin auction lot viewing day, today.
Lot 4592 (in part): "Set of 138 .925 proof silver flag ingots, total ASW 126.4 ounces, in high polish timber display case, estimate AUD $1,800 - $2200"
If I am successful, my minimum bid with 17.5% buyers premium will work out to be AUD $2,115 = U.$.1499.75 That works out to be U.$.11.86 per ounce!

Yeah mister kairu 15x is the lowest I've been able to find . In nyc I live in NJ so I'm sure there is a better place near by .but I don't have anytime when I'm home . There is this other place that has better stuff but it's 18x . I new to all this so I guess I'll chalk it up to growing pains
