contacted him and asked : have these Silver dollars either been cleaned or otherwise treated?
he said HE never cleans coins! wrote back and said I did not ask if HE cleaned them. his answer might have been cleaned. !! he sold a ton of these already and all with Pos feedback. so, I rest my case.

Tusker - Thanks for the link..I looked at a bunch of the sellers ads and sold items, they all appear to have been cleaned some more than others.(so much old silver and no toning) I also noticed this seller takes fairly good pics and with ebay zoom you should have been able to see clearly whats on the coin. Of the ones I seen none where like yours.

I had to play with the lighting to show the damage. At a glance the coins look nice.

Tusker you have been given excellent advice by Tripoli and others. This seller is selling nothing but PTS ed Dollars. Remember that there is no Santa Claus in Numismatics. You can get the odd bargain once in a awhile but not often. This can be a wonderful learning experience for you at a not too terrible cost. I will still stick to what I stated in an earlier post. You get your money and return shipping costs back and THEN leave him a negative! This seller knows exactly what they are doing and it cannot be condoned, or soft pedalled. As you get more experience you will learn what original unplayed with coins look like. Buy a few certified pieces of lower value and use them for reference. Frequent a recommended local coin store and spend a few dollars with them and ask them for guidance. A few numismatic books are also high on any newer collectors list. Good luck! There is also lots of help available here on the forum!

This forum and it's members really are the best....I love visiting this site frequently and often as I learn so much! One point that Pacific made that really should be emphasized is the books.... The best advice I was given was think of what you may spend on coins in one year and spend that instead on books...

Return went off without a hitch and he paid for the shipping. By the sounds of it he wants to keep the high rating and keep selling and making max dollars for min effort. Out of curiosity I went through all of the feedback to see if there were any red flags among the 100% positives and I found very little. One person complained that the package smelled of cigarettes, which I found as well. A few people stated "hassle free transaction" which could indicate that they returned with no issue. Looking through all of this I had a few questions... Are there that many people who don't know what they're buying? Are there that many people who don't care about the condition of their coins? Where is buddy getting all of this old silver? If his customers are happy, and if the purists can return the junk hassle-free, is anyone really losing out?

I have had a bad experience with same seller because of the same issue of trying to sell mint state coins that were cleaned and polished like my poor ol grandpas head. I tested him out with a bid after I sent the lot I purchased from him later and sure enough I was blocked and good riddance, there are decent honest sellers on ebay only trying to make a living but there are these types who are always trying to dupe us, thank goodness for this site and the members who have the experience when the help line is out!

Is anyone losing out here ? I would guess there are several points of view on that from the various knowledgeable members here on this forum. Unless you take a piece of advice from what Ag said in an earlier post, you are going to the loser here. Reread his post on books and education and take it to heart.

I am not rebuffing Ag's advice or anyone else's. I have learned from this and am grateful for all the advice available here. I was merely wondering out loud how this seller could have 100% positive rating if he's peddling junk. Surely I can't be the first dissatisfied customer (and I'm not, from what I've seen here), so where are his negative ratings?

Peddling junk yup! But that is not the point. He is not properly describing the junk he peddles. There was is and always be these wonderful types of sellers.

I went through my old posts and found this. Since I posted this I've moved back to civilization (3 times) and have an LCS that I absolutely cherish. Heeding the advice from the forum faithful I've built a respectable dollar collection now and am looking forward to slowly improving it as budget and opportunity allow. Thank you to everyone for making this community a great place.

Steer clear of problem coins, there are plenty of good coins out there and there are plenty of reputable dealers who deserve and will earn your business.
