I went one better.....went out and purchased what I wanted and said to my family that all they had to do was pay for them.
I like the 2008 Aussie mint sets for the International Year of Planet Earth.
No more socks for me!

well since my wife and I split up I don't have anyone to buy me anything special this year, but I will get what ever my Secret winter holiday person sends me so I am fine with that. It will mean that much more also coming from a fellow forum member

Sure hurts when I see how many out there want Dansco Albums. Especially some of the ones noted. The reason is I go to coin shows about 3 times a month. I've gotten to know many dealers that are repeat dealers at shows. Several of them tell me one of the most common sources of coins is to buy up albums from people. They get practically nothing for the albums, just the coins. They then take all the coins out of the albums and place in 2x2's or lately 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 inch flips. This means they are many albums just sitting at home. Some tell me they just throw them away. So I started to ask for them instead of throwing away. One dealer gave me a few. Then one dealer brought me two boxes full of them and all FREE. I took only the Whitmans since that is what I use. Over 40 of them. Then at the last show he brought a large bin of Albums and told me to take them all or he would through them out. About 50 Dansco Albums. Now here is a funny story. Just as I was about to take the entire bin out to my car the dealer said wait a second. My Daughter, about 10 years old, wants to start a Mercury dime collection so let her have one. She reached in and although several Mercury dime Albums, she grabbed one, opened it and WOW. The entire last page was full of MS Dimes including the 45 Micro S. We went throught all the rest but only that one had coins. He didn't want to let here have them but all the other dealers in the area were making little remarks including me so I think she ended up with them. Every coin looked fantastic. Next show I'll check to see if she was allowed to keep them. If not, I'll comment on going to other dealers from now on. Meanwhile, back to the Dansco Albums. Like I said I use only Whitman and with well over 100 Albums I am not about to start changing. I took them all to a flea market and gave all the ones I didn't want to an elderly seller there. I first let a few people I know that collect coins look through them and they also took a few. There was almost every type imaginable in that bin. I would suggest if you frequent coin shows stop and talk to all the dealers. If they do the same and just throw them out, they may give them to you free or for a very cheap price. Nothing to loose by asking.

Good advice Carl. Unfortunately, no coin shows in my part of the country.

I know that many people just don't have coin shows in their areas and just don't know why. This coin collecting mania lately should have people everywhere putting on coin shows. Sort of like Beanie Babies. For a while there I saw them everwhere. Even Walgreens was selling them. I sure don't know why some big coin collector doesn't try to start a chain of coin shows everywhere. In the meantime, sure feel for those that don't have access to them.

Ok I know this is kind of an old thread, but I have been thinking about getting a microscope. I'd be looking for one that is camera compatible. Any suggestions?

zacharycash, It depends on your price range, camera options, etc. Most decent microscopes are going to run ~$500. You can purchase them with a camera tube and adapter (another ~$100) to fit almost any camera you might have. There are also companies that make adapters that fit over one of the eyepieces. There are a less expensive option to the tube/adapter (~$30). If you want to step up to more expensive models, several manufacturers also make fully integrated digital cameras. These can be plugged into your PC for direct download/live photo. These guys start around $1500. You can also add cost by selecting different optics - eye pieces and objectives - to suit your needs. Leica is a good solid company and their scopes are decently priced. You can also try Nikon or Zeiss (much more expensive). If you want to go old school, I would look into a Wild (pronounced vild, not wild). The optics are high quality and they are relatively easy to find on ebay. Most of these are going to be from the 1950s and, as a warning, the focus knobs do wear out on these. I regularly use microscopy for work. I have 3 Wild's, 1 Zeiss, and a Nikon and I generally use them for looking at things much smaller than coins. I hope this helps and isn't too much information. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have. patrick

I have a QX-5 that is actually a kids toy and costs between 50-80 bucks on ebay and works just fine for coins, it hooks to the PC and can take snapshots and video. I know this isn't a high end option but I find the 200x to be way more than most people would need to show any coins attributes

Back to Christmas presents. I just bought my own. At the last coin show last Saturday and Sunday I purchased a almost MS state 1922 Plain. Needed this to make my MS collection of Lincoln Cents look better. My set #1 of 10 sets of Lincoln Cents in basically all MS in various numbers. The only coin that ruined the appearance was a F12 22 Plain so for Christmas I now added the MS 22 Plain. Really looks great to turn the pages of that Whitman Album and every coin looks new. Same dealer as always gave me about 10 more Dansco Albums. As long as they are free I take them and give them to others that use Dansco.

Woah.... seemed like there are a lot of coin shows happening in your area (San Francisco - Bay Area is a big metropolitan but we don't have that many, maybe 6 a year).... quote: As long as they are free I take them and give them to others that use Dansco.
Do you have a sign-up sheet hiding somewhere.... No more Christmas gift for me.... I'm living away from home and I am broke..... waiting to win the lottery... uhm but I haven't buy any tickets....

Already bought several Dansco Albums, mainly for Australian coins as well as Presidential dollars. The newspaper I work for gave me a crisp new $100 banknote for Christmas, so I will be looking for a nice coin to spend it on.
