I've received this mailing, too. XF/AU 1921 Morgans (most likely what you'll receive from the mail order huckster) can be purchased at one of my local coin dealers for $20 any day of the week (they're in the cull bin, plus no sales tax here). On the other hand, one of the TV coin shows promotes "BU" 1921's at $49.95 + s&h, and they also make a big deal over the prospects for silver going back to $50 per oz. (or even higher). My perspective is that for the minimally sophisticated collector/speculator the $29.99 price point (which decreases with a larger quantity purchase) is neither a bargain nor totally outrageous given that there's at least assurance of authenticity.

I've been seeing adds like that on TV a lot lately. Someone must have billions and billions of them by the way those adds sound.

I'm thinking particularly of the "tribute" Morgans you'll see offered, silver plated copies that are an absolute, total waste of money. At least a genuine 1921 has some intrinsic value. Friend of mine from another forum pointed out the coin in their ad is a counterfeit. The obverse - dated 1878 - is the 1921-only design.  |

Not that such a practice is ideally what you want to see, but I don't think you can infer that the actual product will turn out to be bogus. I'll disclose that some years back (long enough ago that the pricing was lower) I ordered a such a batch, if not from these exact folks, from somebody who was doing more or less the same sort of business, with the same kind of fuzzy condition disclaimer (then, there was a better deal with quantity, which in this particular case is not so). Anyway, what I received was mostly XF/AU, but only a couple were 1921's, actually. One of the 1878-1904's was actually low MS, and one was probably down in the high VF range. They were certainly all genuine, and none cleaned or damaged. So all in all based upon my experience, it wasn't any sort of blatant ripoff. Colligo ergo sum

I'd make one last remark - there are folks living in remote locales who don't have ready access to coin shops and their cull bins, and to get to such is not a cost or teouble free thing, so for those, while we might make snide remarks about the lack of value, roll the dice mail order deals like this probably are a reasonable alternative to a lot of ebay auctions for raw coins that are neither cheaper nor less hyped.
