The mint didn't re-opened in 1965.

Thought it wasn't until 1968. Were the SMS sets produced in San Francisco?

The coin is in pretty nice condition, but definitely a late die state. Unless I see better pics, it looks like Die Deterioration to me.

The 1965-1967 didn't have mint marks for any of the coins those years from the four mints. (yes four)

That would be Philly, Denver, San Francisco, and.... West Point?

Correct! The West Point mint was used to fill the void of the coinage removed because of the silver pulled.

OK, I've been busy taking pictures. I took probably a hundred, cropped and edited and finally came up with a couple decent ones that I think show what I thought was a D / S. It still does look like that on some pics, but, on others it looks like it could be an RPM, or..? You guys tell me what you think.

The bottom serif does seem to show a split where it should be and counter to the deterioration lines so I believe you do have a rpm. In a shot or two I can see a curve may lead you to see part of an S but as Coop has already said the San Francisco mint had been out of the final production end of the minting process for a few years so a D/S it should not be.

The close up shows a VLDS die with heavy die flow lines. Not a RPM.

Hello everybody& . This is my VERY first time adding anything after I registered. The reason I am on this particular "thread" is I was searching the internet for what **I** thought/think to be an S UNDER a D.....or 2 D's. The nickel I have is in pretty bad shape and when I use my USB microscope, it doesn't do it any justice. With my magnifying glass(11x) combined with my 3x Dollar tree special glasses I **DO** see what **SEEMS** to be an S under a Different (or 2). IS it **POSSIBLE** that even though you back up your EXTREMELY VAST and WISE knowledge, that something like this COULD have happened. I know ABSOLUTELY nothing and take pride in that statement& & LOL.
