Now half way through the $500.00 and only ONE 40% silver ! CRAP !
However I did find a 2002 P in really good shape and a 2005 P in good shape.
And I decided to keep those that are "glowing" with good condition to save for maybe a future book....don't know.

From what folks have said in the other thread (roll hunting), the bank-wrapped can be feast or famine. Most people are saying they average 5-7 keepers out of a box of $500 from the FED.

I still am waiting for my $1000 in bank-wrapped- now won't be here until Wed. I am so eager to get these! My bank did, however, get in $240 in havles from a customer yesterday plus $20 in IKES. I snatched them all up and will be looking through them this weekend.

I am betting that based on what everyone is saying in this and the other roll hunting thread that customer wrapped are the way to go. They could be feast or famine, too, but from all the customer-wrapped I've gone through, there are much more feasts than famine, and the feasts, like what you've seen Eaglefoot, can be enormous. These customer-wrapped can be very hard to find and you are competing with other coin collectors in your city who might be doing the same. I recommend leaving your name and a contact person at several branches near where you work and hope they would call you when they get in more than $100 in halves.

eaglefoot - don't be discouraged. I searched a total of $2,000 of halves ordered from the FED over the past two days and found ZERO. I waited over a week for those four boxes and was extremely disappointed when I opened the first box and saw that the entire box was all 1995's. The other 3 boxes had no silver whatsoever. I'm discouraged but plan to drive to some surrounding towns on my day off next week looking for hand rolled halves/

Yeah....... I would start CRYING if I opened a box and it was all 1995's ! OH MAN ! LOL>>
I can see the feast of famine from Fed Res. boxes now ......first hand. So I'm gonna cash this in and go hit some nearby towns and see what that produces. I'll tell my girlfriend we're going for a "drive" and see what I can find doing that. I won't give up on the Fed boxes......but I have A LOT of places to get hand rolls and "loose" ones from .........

I've been searching halfs for the past couple of weeks, and I'm not to the point at the moment that I can afford to "buy" a $500 box, so I have been hitting customer wrapped rolls. I've had very little luck, except this past Monday at a large downtown bank that had $260 worth. I found 36 40% and 3 90% in those rolls. Oh, lest I forget, another downtown bank sold me 8 rolls that were Fed or Brinks wrapped, and got one 90% and five 40% in those rolls. I was going to really go out of my way to put aside the $$$ for the bank box, but based on what I am reading here, maybe customer rolls are the way to go. Today I checked $120 worth; zilch. I'll check more tomorrow! Good luck to everybody; keep posting your finds so folks going through a dry spell won't get discouraged!

Kk....... I found one of the few remaining banks with halves in my town on Saturday. They are Fed Res. wrapped rolls though. I found 4 40% and 1 90% in $250.00 worth. They told me they had another $1,000.00 or so of these Fed rolls and that was it. So, I guess I'll clean them out this week and topple this bank of their silver.
But, I'm still excited by the prospect of customer wrapped rolls ! If I look hard, I might find several more banks to check, but then it's off to the nearby towns (grew up there, so I know em') It's NOT becoming an "obsession", it's becoming an "odyessy" ! Ha Ha LoL
Oops though !! I can't overlook the fact that I DO HAVE TO PAY SOME BILLS THOUGH ! Ha Ha I can't keep shopping this money around forever !

eagle - cash in your 44 silver coins now. You'll get about 10x face value for them, then you can use that as your roll-purchase money and you won't be cutting into the bill-paying money anymore.

That's a good idea.........but I've never cashed in ANYTHING before ! Wouldn't even know how to go about doing that ! I don't know any other coin collectors really. We do have a coin shop here, but the guys really fruity and weird. I've seen him at coin and estate auctions before trying to sell and buy. He's got a nice little shop, but of course there are NO good deals. He's trying to make money, and I don't blame him for that......that's why he's in business....... but I know he isn't going to give me top dollar for ANYTHING......espicially silver.
And, I've never done ebay before. I've browsed it.....but never signed up or purchased or sold......nothing........
So......I don't know how I would sell anything I have. At 39 years old, I just figured to be an old man with a "heap" of coins and silver that will be passed on down to another family member who's interested in continuing the tradition of coin collecting. ( I have stuff from my Great Grandfather, my Grandparents, my parents, and of course the "hoard" that I'm amassing for myself.
But if I knew of a way........ I wouldn't mind maybe thinking of selling the silver halves for "coin buying money" ......... I don't know. A few of them are worth MORE than the price of silver too....... some are in INCREDIBLE CONDITION !

your odds of finding silver halves are actually quiet good, I regularly get silver clad, and pre 1964 halves out of boxes that I order from my bank. As for the bicentenials, dont save them unless they have s mint marks or are made out of silver.

Would anyone have some extra money by chance that they could give me ? I really need to go to an estate auction or go buy some more "halves" and silver hunt or SOMETHING !! So, if all forum members would chip $20.00 into a "sympathy fund".......then I would really be happy ! ANYBODY ? Hee Hee !

eagle,
Have you considered the selling forum here? You can post your product and the price you want and see if anybody bites. Or use the auction forum, same idea, but list a starting price. You might get some silver buyers, or maybe some looking for the silver they need for their Kennedy albums. You can also use sites like Deleted4.com to figure out the silver content of what you have, and its worth according to the latest price of silver. Just some random thoughts I wanted to share ....

eaglefoot- If your really interested in cashing some silver in, you might want to consider some of the refineries. Of course I wouldn't reccommend having anything of real collector value melted down, but some of the Kennedy half dollars might not be so bad to sacrifice. In fact when I get enough of them myself I will be considering this avenue.

But you really have to consider that many of these silver and other "special" coins are worth so much more to collectors. If you have some coins that someone would like to add to their collection they would likely be willing to pay you far more than the silver value alone.

CPHicago had some very good suggestions for you too. I will be keeping some of those thoughts in mind myself.

If you're interested in looking into some of the refineries, I've heard that one of the best is https://www.midwestrefineries.com. Most of the other big refineries have web sites too so it wouldn't be any problem finding them via an online search. I've heard that the one you see on TV (goldkit.com) is actually a very good one too. They'll go out of their way to buy your precious metals from you.

I've learned a little bit about refineries because one of the avenues of recycling I am pursuing as an occupation is the recycling of precious metals (i.e. buying and selling of gold jewelry etc.). This is actually what led me to an interest in metal detecting and in turn coin collecting.

I wouldn't rule out ebay either. But it is a bit of a gamble. Although I did do OK on selling a few silver quarters on there a little while back.

May you make top dollar on your silver! Now is a good time to sell due to the value increase in all PM's.

-Bill

I really like and am interested in this advice on avenues for selling ....... but I've got to say, I really don't want to sell one single Wheat penny or piece of silver ever. And deep down in my heart, I sometimes think that half of the stuff I buy, I would likely have to use as a "retirement plan". Because....... I haven't one ! I don't have a 401k, no CD's, no IRA's, no nest egg........ So, when I get into my 60's (I'm 39) maybe then some of the proof sets that I have extra of, silver, or stuff I have lots of....... I would use a source "supplemental income" to an unreliable "ghost Social Security". Now, I know that's a worst case scenerio and I want family to inherit my collection....... but I'll be able to part with "some" things at that time I'm sure.
Additionally, we're looking to have a good year here with the Company, if we can just get Winter out of the way ! So....... I don't know if I could ever get myself to sell anything ! And besides....... I STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO TAKE A PICTURE OF A COIN PROPERLY WITH GOOD DETAIL ! (though I haven't tried again for quite some time now)
