I would like to see a closer shot of the mark on the obverse. It looks incuse to me. But it looks rounded like a struck through wire. A scratch on a coin with a knife would leave a flat mark and not rounded.

Yes, coop - that is what I am looking for: on your experiment, the incision is clear and so is the pressure ridge along it. Maybe it is just the lighting, but I do not see that on the OP and it also appears to be raised and rounded.

Pete I think the original image is almost like the old stare at the poster to find the hidden image. If you look at the R you can see the start of the cut. Down towards trust the lighting starts to kick in and you can see the right side valley wall and the shadow down the center of the cut line. In the shoulder neck area the lighting is being played with again and the shadow goes from the center to almost the left side of the valley wall. If you look at the bottom of the bust you can see the end of the cut highlighted by light pretty good.

Now on the other hand I may be looking at in reverse and seeing a cut instead of a raised area.

I took a quarter and a pocket knife and made almost the same exact cut. I'm gonna play around with some pictures and lighting and I'm fairly certain I can duplicate the posted picture.

Thanks davec13 - I do see what you are talking about...I am about ready to concede that it is a cut. So where's Waldo?

It's hard to find a family friendly version, but I can't stop thinking of mallrats while looking at this picture. This is the clean version, but you can if you decided too find the full version.

Closeup of the feature, note die chip on top of it.

Why do we have 2 threads going about the same coin?

I put this on 2 different forms, the US coin moderator moved the post to error coin thread so now there are two in same forum.

Thanks for the extra image. But you can see where it was damaged perhaps with a razor blade. I was hoping for a rounded trench like you find on a struck through wire.

How can a damaged coin have die chip on top of it?

That is a metal shard from the cut, not a die chip.
