I like the collection and the idea behind it. It never occured to me to put together a type set of one denomination, but I am working on filling a Dansco 7070(US Type Set). Have you considered adding any of the commemorative halves?

If it is half dollars that interest you, may I make the suggestion of acquiring a few classic commems for you half dollar set? Almost all of them from 1892-1952 are silver and half dollar denomination and they have some interesting history behind them and some excellent designs and many can be purchased in MS for $200 or less.

No commems in my collection yet, of any denomination. That type of coinage has not peaked my interest. I tend to consider them more as tokens/souveniers meant for collection instead of circulation.

I think, no matter who you are, there will always be a coin that is unreachable, either because it doesn't exist i.e.1964 Peace dollar that were alledgedly all melted; or because the only known specimans are so rare you that the odds you ever even get a chance to purchase one is almost nill i.e. 1933 double eagle. Even Bill Gates would have a hell of a time completing a total collection of certain coins. For me the key to collecting coins is being happy and feeling achievement it the effort you've put into getting what you have and enjoying the fun and expectation of your next purchase. After all,if you could collect every coin, then you'd be done. There would be nothing left and you would have to look for another hobby to peak your interest. Not trying to sound preachy at all. Your post helped me to understand why I like coin collecting and what I can expect to get out of it! |

That is true for the modern commems but the classics did indeed circulate quite a bit  |

Okay, I am sorry, but I noticed that you said you just started collecting. Aren't you the guy that posted the pictures of your new 1856 Flying Eagle that you bought because the other one you had was too low of a grade for you? And your gold double eagle? And now this half collection? If you are the same guy, I want to enroll in the be like 1sikevo class. You sir are my personal hero and I am going to guess that you will have that last half sooner than you let on. Congrats on having great taste and an eye for gems. One day I am gonna try it too.

Ah, the half dollar type set, I hope to begin mine this year as well. I just started searching halves a few months ago and have most of the Kennedy's from circulation. I like the halves ... Well done!

Dude, sweet collection! About the draped bust w/ small eagle reverse, don't lose any sleep over it. Most people wouldn't it.

OK, I collected some coins when I was about 10 yrs old, but stopped when chasing girls in school became more fun than chasing Ms Liberty. Fast forward twenty plus years, decent job, own my house and have a small family. One day, while looking at ebay, I realized these coins that I used to only dream about when I was a kid is actually now within reach. So, I'm now living my little childhood fantasy. The 56 FE is an investment tool as much as a collection. The gold eagles I plan to give my 2 daughters (ages 4 months and 2 1/2 yrs)when they graduate. And like most of you guys will agree, coins are addicting I learned a lot from my mistakes and continue to learn more everyday. Here's a picture of the older one cherry picking out which coins she wants  She'll be collecting and on this board in a few years.  Edited by 1sikevo

You don't have to own every half dollar ever made :) (remind me of that every now and then, please). Halves are very cool. They are large enough that you can see detail and there are enough varieties so that you never get bored or have enough. Just do the best you can as few of us will own the very best.

Yeah I tried to get my girls into coins as well and at first they were into it and now its just good ol Dad's thing he does all the time.
