I had to Google for the significance of the Texas Western College Basketball Championship. If this legislation gets approved, I hope the coins won't be indented/cupped like the previous pain-in-the-butt Baseball commems. And by pain, I mean the raw coins won't fit in standard holders/albums and the slabbed coins won't fit in NGC/PCGS slotted boxes.

Anyway, if anyone else is interested in the history of this championship game, here's a story from ESPN:

I'm all in for #6 ... the Apollo landing was an event of not only National significance but human significance.
Agreed. I would be sad and upset if we got any of those other options and did not have the Apollo 11.

I would love to see the Mayflower-- just because we need a modern commemorative with a boat on it soon! Hopefully not as cluttered as a lot of modern ones as well.

Thanks commems. I haven't read the legislation language, but this Coin Update article from last summer indicates the Apollo 11 coins would also be curved (like the BBHOF coins) with an added unique design component:

Quote:
A total of four different commemorative coins would be issued under the program. This would include up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 silver dollars, and 750,000 clad half dollars, each issued in proof and uncirculated qualities. The final coin of the program would be 5 ounce .999 silver coin with a face value of $1, struck in proof quality.

The bill requires the coins to be produced in a fashion similar to the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame 75th Anniversary Commemorative Coins, with a convex reverse and concave obverse. The shape would allow the reverse to more closely resemble the faceplate of an astronaut's helmet and the obverse design to have a more dramatic display.

It is also included as the sense of the Congress that, to the extent possible without significantly adding to the price of the coins, the coins should be produced with the design of the reverse continuing over what would otherwise be the edge of the coins, such that the reverse design extends all the way to the obverse design.

I guess I should be happy that no Congressman suggested that the coins associated with #5 on the list also be shaped like cups.

captainrich, I passed on the BBHOF myself and am not too keen on these convex/concave gimmick coins. They say they are innovative designs, etc. I think the artwork should speak for itself. I personally thought the artwork on the baseball coins was a bit boring, so I apparently they come up with this "cupped" concept - in the future, maybe the US Mint and CCAC/CFA can just select stronger designs! Maybe they need to hire better artists.

The design selected for the obverse of the Baseball HOF coins was the result of an nationwide public competition in the spring of 2013; 178 design entries were received. The winner was Cassie McFarland. The Mint was responsible for the sculpting/engraving of the winning design; the work was completed by US Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.

The Act that authorized the coins specified the common reverse design: "The design...shall depict a baseball similar to those used by Major League baseball." So, the Mint had very little latitude for artistic expression. Everhart was responsible for creating the baseball design and its sculpting/engraving.

Personally, I think the Mint did a very good job with the designs considering the parameters under which it worked.

Maybe it's time for another 30-year gap in commemorative issues.

I'm probably the biggest college basketball fan on here, and I still can't get into that commemorative. The movie (glory road) is good enough for me.

I think the coast guard and definitly Apollo 11 should be used.

The only problem is they need to get away from using mission badges for the design. I'm mean sure it be great but we already have the Ike and Susan b Anthony.
