To. Choose between these ....

I would pick the 1866

I think the date is more clear ... I like seeing the date

The '67 is the better of the two. Both have been dipped, with the '66 appearing much duller and looks to have been more vigorously cleaned than the '67. The '67 at least still retains some of its luster, so if you had to pick one to keep, I'd go with the '67. If I were seeking a nice, original Shield nickel, I'd pass on both and look for something with more skin &/or luster... and a fuller date.

Happy searching,

ET

Looks like some green stuff on the obverse of the '67. Maybe an acetone bath would help.

I would keep the 1867 nickel. It has better eye appeal to me. As for the other nickel, if it was my coin I would trade it in for that 42-P proof silver War Nickel I have had my eye on.

I would if I could. But I have a budget of about $50 for this type, and both of these coins meet that requirement. But since I have two eating a hole in my wallet, I need to sell one, and I am debating which one.

I like Kanga's idea. I can make a profit on both of the coins, and use that profit to buy a nicer coin for the type. Net free coin.

Such is my dilemma.

I love this thread because it shows you beauty is in the eye of the beholder! So many opinions and all of them correct!

I would have to see the two in hand, the pictures distort things too much to make an informed opinion.

I like the AU better, I like the luster of the second one compared to the first.

I have decided to sell them both and use the proceeds to fund a problem-free AU coin. I have my sights on one...

The most common sense approach.

I kind of figured that you were niggled by the problems of them both, and would never be satisfied.

Since you indicated that you would be prepared to part with either of them, you would still not be happy with what remained.

Wait until another example comes along that you know that you would be happy with, and get it.

Then comes the time to sell the two that you own, to compensate for the cash layout you have already made.

I have sold the 1866, but decided to keep the 1867. I really liked the luster, which made the rays on the reverse really pop out. The bad strike I felt was a physical manifestation of the troubles the Mint had with minting these early nickels. It is not visible in the pictures, but there is some pretty significant MD, which I find interesting as well. Since I collect because of the history of the coins, I feel that this coin has more historical significance than a better-struck specimen for the reasons stated above.

I only paid $49 for it, which is unheard of for an AU 1867 With Rays, so any profit I make would make for a substantial start to buying a better specimen, should I want to upgrade.

For sure the 1867, hands down but selling both for an original is the way to fly and never know may end up with some change!

And here's the deal .... If you have two coins each worth $30 and then another worth $60 or double .... Chances are the $60 coin will appreciate to $70 before the two $30 coins go to $35 each ..... You are almost always better off buying quality over quantity!

The AU looks better in some places like the REV. But the XF looks better in other places as well like the date.

Sell both and buy one that has best qualities of both, yea right, easier said than done - tough part is finding the right one!
