Good to hear they have begun shipping.
And might a photo be available?

My conclusion is it's impossible to photograph this coin! This meagre attempt may put me in the running for the worst CCF photo ever. But see the reflection of both my finger and black camera lens on the imperfectly focused upper half of the coin? That's all the sky area and the silver is so highly polished that it's absolutely mirror like. That polished area also serves as a background to the delicate sails. So I give up, no way can a direct shot be taken without it reflecting whatever it's facing. If anyone is able, once their coin is in hand, I'd be curious to know the technique.

sounds not realistic, but instead of DSLR try with iPhone or any other phone. Put the coin bit an angle and not as close...just crop after the picture, Will be way better

As a matter of fact I've ordered the simple little gadget that's supposed to enable an iPad or iPhone to take close up photos. I have high hopes it works as well as it's supposed to. Otherwise my macro camera setting generally takes pretty good photos except the process of downloading photos to my computer from my camera is very cumbersome. But great idea Silveroid! Although I did try taking the photo at an angle, even outside where the lighting was better, my frustration peaked after successfully capturing the reflection of my neighbours house. But maybe if I'd laid the SD flat it would reflect the blue sky.

I understand that the Mint is considering issuing a 2017 SD that will be made to order. That is, they will offer them for pre-order for a few months, and then create as many as were ordered (and no more).
This is quite a change in process (not unlimited, but mintage is unknown when you order) and could shake up the large silver dollar collector community.
Opinions?

Kind of like some of the US NCLT, Kennedy gold was sold to a certain date with a max mintage on the onset of sales, rather have a known mintage at the beginning of sales.

I wonder how that would affect the price?

In the US version it seems most are trying to get a perfect graded 70 and return the rest, I doubt it helps the value like the silver dollar mc coin

I like it! Those who want one will definitely have the opportunity to buy one at issue price, speculative purchases will likely be reduced as no artificial sell-outs can be created and we'll be able to get a sense of how large (or small) the SD collecting community really is at present.

That would be okay by me. I wonder if RCM noticed SD collectors might be more tradional in collecting habits, more prone to long term collecting than flipping, not putting attention to the immediacy of new releases/low mintage sell outs. Maybe from conducting focus group sessions. Just going by elimination of the BU dollar and sharply reduced mintages of SD sets, the volume of SD collectors must be quickly diminishing as well. So perhaps RCM might try this out in the belief it might better suit this segment's buying habits to sustain or gain SD sales?

Quote: I wonder how that would affect the price? The plan is it would be $59.95 which is the regular price of a SD yet this has the feel of a sp .ed. dollar which are generally $69.95. I think it's an interesting idea. As much as I like to know the details before I buy, as Commems pointed out this does provide some real feedback on the true interest in SDs. Of course it depends somewhat on the design which is expected to revolve around the sesquicentennial. The coins will be double dated to be in collectors hands by Canada Day.

I suspect that happens here too, in the pursuit of low # COAs as well depending how prevalent the misperception that low = fresh mint/higher grade. The cost of presales may also be reduced if exchanges due to inferior production was the sole option, as opposed to no-questions-asked 30 day satisfaction guarantees.
