I talked to a bank manager around me and he said that they had to order $15k from the Fed of the new dollars in order to get them. He said that his bank and another one are splitting them.

I was told last Tuesday that my bank would release the Monroe Dollars on Friday.
So, I'll head down there tomorrow and hope to be able to buy some.

Bobbi: The only time I've been asked if I had an account is when I cashed in halves. I rotate branches that I have an account with when I cash in rolls but use any bank when I ask for them. BTW and OT: I make a sweep of banks when I look for Kennedy halves. I find more Kennedys when I ask for " Kennedy halves" then I do when I ask for "Kennedy Rolls". I've received 40% and 90% silver directly from the teller as singles.

Can I assume that a roll of Monroe dollars, received from the bank on the first day they are available, neatly rolled by machine, are in mint condition? Or if not, can I assume they are in any other particular condition?

Many times when you open a brand new roll you'll see the marks from the roll machines. Some of those machines are worse than others and you may end up with a really messy pile of so called Uncirculated coins.

kceb10:
I live on the east coast and have received both P and D coins from N.F. String & Son. The rolls looked identical. No way to tell without cracking them open.
My vault attendant thought he only got "P" dollars but a "D" roll was found in one box of "P"s. There is not even a guarantee if he pulls 10 "P" out of a box that the next one will be another "P".

I went to my bank on Friday, and picked up some Monroe Dollars.
I got the last that the tellers had, but there may have been more in the vault. I didn't ask.

It is obvious that I need to change my methods. Normally I charge everything I can to my credit card, groceries even. Then I pay electronically and have my $ directly deposited. Rarely ever see any money. Now that this coin bug has started gnawing at me, I think I'm going to have to make some radical changes to the way I do things to allow me to see some money. When I first saw the pix of the Presidential dollars, I really thought they were very pretty. But when I got some from the bank all rolled up nice and tidy, they increased their beauty in my eyes. So whether or not they'll ever appreciate, I, too, will keep buying them as they come out simply because I like them.

Well, the debate as to their future value is overwhelmingly NOT MUCH ! But I too collect them wholeheartedly.....But ONLY for the first three years for me. Since they'll change in 2009 with In God We Trust being taken off of the edge and put onto the face of the coin. I'll collect everything I can of them until then (U.S.Mint packaged proofs, uncirc. stuff, rolls, etc.etc).......after that..... I'll continue to add to my Presedential book folders with single coins uncirculated, but no more. That will be it for me in the Presidential dollar arena ! My main focus will remain on old "Classic" coins, I love the new stuff.......but you can sink too much money in the "new" coins, for quite possibly a "bleak" future value. (except for gold & silver....mmmmmm me likes them shiny coins!) And don't collect them (Pres.dollars) for "future profits"......only aquire a small amount for their beauty or historical value....because you WON'T get rich off of those babies ! Nor will any family member 248 years from now who inherits your collection ! So .....carefull that you don't go "hog wild" with them ! (just my opinion though) But hey....... if the U.S. get 1.6 Billion in population vs 300 million now.....in the future..... who knows anything about mint numbers compared to population numbers (meaning more collectors & demand).....and then the "RARITY" of these coins would/could be something NO ONE NOW CAN EVEN FATHOM !

You sound like me - I like those shiny coins, too. Proofs are a thing of beauty in my eye. It sounds like the pres will never go over its face value, or at least not much. But I do know that since I only pay $1 per, that I won't lose anything other than the inflationary value. I'm content just feeding my little hobby for now, at only a few of each.
I've purchased too many eagles lately, more than I should. I've mentioned before that we don't have any collectors in the family, so I should probably be putting my little dollar pittances in places other than coins. But as long as I keep it at hobby level, guess all is well.

SunTrust had them on the 14th. That's where I got mine.

I picked up a roll of D Monroe dollars today. These are my first 2008 coin and some where pretty scuffed and marked whereas others looked amazing!
Bobbi mentioned switching from credit to cash transactions and I've done the same thing! I find myself making regular trips to the ATM just so I can get change with purchases! I also paid for part of my lunch today with halves that I'd sorted through (the waitress who got a handful as a tip thought it was pretty cool!). I'm fearful that I'll be getting the reputation of the "coin guy" at my regular haunts and they stop wanting my business (the cashier seemed clueless as to where to put the half dollars in her till)! :)

Hey, Neffchiro, I do so relate to your thoughts. Tomorrow is the big day. I plan to go to the bank for the very first time and buy some coins. I had no idea that was ever done, but thanks to this group, I'm learning lots. So I'll go buy some, and come home and play some more. Won't that be the day when we pay for lunch with eleventy-dozen dimes and leave the tip the same.
