So, 100% it's not an error coin ? Basically worthless piece of junk that someone altered or a Dryer Coin then ? (I'm not using cotton gloves on it anymore then !)

Correct. When it gets back to the bank, it will be returned to mint for recycling.

In the first 2 photos, the edge appears to be concave - is it?

Looks the same. The color difference makes it look that way with a reflection.

Quote:Basically worthless piece of junk that someone altered or a Dryer Coin then ? Not worthless... 10¢. But it will be worth less & less with passing time Being serious, it makes an interesting oddity, plus its an educational tool.

I added a few of your images to my image library. Thanks to mike he noticed something I missed. The absence of the roll over of the rim and the lace of damage to the faces of the coin indicate it is probably not a Dryer Coin, but a damaged coin perhaps spooned or even rolled with a heavy bar on the edge on a steel table or cement. Either way it is a damaged coin.

I agree with Earle and I would keep it for that reason

It's not a Dryer Coin. But the edge has been rolled and squeezed in the horizontal plane. Post-strike damage, in other words.

I agree with Nyfireman ; I've seen a lot of large cents and numerous reeded coins that received this treatment and the results are nearly identical.

@Mike I defer to your knowledge. Would you please tell me what characteristics show this is not a Dryer Coin so I can be better informed?

I personally didn't think it was a Dryer Coin, but rolled too. Earle42, the obverse and reverse remain unscathed; luster intact.

I am not arguinbg the point by any means, I am trying to learn. Some of the Dryer Coins at the link I posted before had a decent amount of luster. Some still hint at it, but all the ones in the link were also stored in a "junk" cup in a garage since the 50-60s. They were given no special love. When my grandfather was repairing the machines for his business and found them, he would toss them into a cup on his garage workbench. Over the years he amassed quite a few. This also was literally, as the crow flies, 2.5-3 miles from the southern shore of Lake Erie in the Lake Erie Snow Belt region of PA. Thus humidity (Canada winds always blow down across the lake in to the region) was always a concern when storing coins. Even in winter the air has a lot of water in it and makes the cold bite right to the bone. SO these were exposed year around to those conditions. Again, I am just offering this up as to why its possible that some of mine retained details, but do not have a high luster. I don't doubt there is some other way a rim could be made to look like the one on this dime and am simply wondering if there is a definitive way to tell. I know Mike would be the one who would know and help me understand it.

Some day I will find a legitimate semi-valuable error coin....just gotta keep looking. I'm starting to coin roll hunt again ! Thanks Mike and all others for the education too.

With coin damage, we have to adjust our thinking from time to time.
