Probably no reason to buy a recent SE slabbed. Just save the cash and buy raw as long as it's in good shape and not cleaned.

If you like the slabs, buy them, but most Eagles come in the upper grades anyway.

Buying 5 slabbed Eagles means you spent the cost of a 6th Eagle on the slabs.

I'd buy the one that I think looks better.

I own absolutely no slabbed coins. What's the point, unless it's a rarity that's worth the cost to get it slabbed? I own plenty of beautiful, old, BU/AU coins for which I didn't have to pay a premium to have some egghead with a microscope gawk at and then slap a sticker on.

I also prefer raw because I can hold it in my hand and feel the actual coin--just like the people did years and years ago (depending on how old the coin is, up to 200 years ago) as opposed to some impersonal piece of McPlastic that feels exactly the same no matter what coin is inside.

say a slabed is 27.00 and raw is 22.00

Buy five raw and save enough so that the sixth one is "free".

anyone else want to chime in bring it on, I will listen.

As much as people collectors, they really are just bullion. If you need to sell fast at any commercial business in the future, they will look at the current spot price and quote you an offer below that. For that reason, I'd only buy raw.

If there is a particular reason to buy the slabbed, like the "S" mint coins from a couple years ago, then yes. Or something like a Mercanti signed slab. Or the Bi centennial slabbed coins signed by their designers. That kind of thing I would in a second. Otherwise, it is really just preference.

In my opinion, slabs have their place for the authentication of rare coins and/or the preservation of expensive coins. However, I think they take away much of the "feel" of holding a coin. For this reason, I leave my coins in original government packaging or put them in air-tite holders. The air-tites seal up the coins just as well as the slabs, but you get much more of the feel of actually holding the coins. They are also much less expensive than slabs. Slabbing common modern coins is just wasting money in my opinion.

For ASE's, I'm doing or did or in the process of doing both. Lol Did you get that?

I've completed a raw Dansco album, with a few that I will eventually upgrade. I'm in the process of of complete slabbed proof set. That will eventually include the 95w. I am also in the process of a slabbed complete set all mints and marks. The last method or type of set may take longer as my OCD has me focused on the proofs right now.

I've also taken a liking to .9999 Canadian moderns. Maple Leaf/Birds of Prey(completed)/Predator etc etc. So those little distractions will stand in the way more than likely. lol

Not a fan of slabs, but if you refuse to buy them, you really can't collect anything that costs more than a couple hundred bucks these days. For ASE, you have a choice, and I'd choose to not bother with unnecessary plastic.

To your point Andrew99, I have every single ASE except the 1995-W Proof. None of mine are slabbed and they all look perfect to my picky retentive eyes. I've been looking at 1995-W Proofs for some time. All of the slabbed PR-69's that I've seen have had issues which would cause them not to grade PR-69 in my opinion. I've also seen several raw 1995-W Proofs, but they all looked pretty bad.
