To nds76, I totally forgot what I was going to say when I was blindsided by eaglefoot dissing my favourite coin... just kidding ef!...  My Kennedy album ends at 2001. I have not collected 2002+. I am thinking of starting a second album to collect these. I think you make a good point; it might be better start now before it gets too expensive! |

On those 2002 thru 2008 half dollars. I sometimes find those coins in fedboxs of coins. They rare since they were not sold to banks. My set needs like 3 or 4 of them finish my keeper set.
Reason I find them was sometimes peaple break up mint sets or spend those us mint rolls or bags from goverment. Maybe one or two coins for every fedbox I do I find them at face. I spent 3 dollars of 2002 thru 2005 recently at an store. Reason they damaged or something was wrong with to install in my set. I tossed them back out there.
2001 denver and philly coins are easy to find all day long in fedboxs but 2002 thru 2007 are tough. 2000 denver and philly coins are easy find in brand new bu coin in those fedboxs. My last 5 boxs gave up 300 to 500 dollars face on all brand new 2000 philly coins. So much I just spent an ton them buying stuff.
Before you buy those coins for set. You may buy few fedboxs of halfs to get them. At same time keep the proof coins and pre 70 silver coins. Boxs cost 500 bucks at bank and you can talk with teller about an special ordor on those.

Collecting the ENTIRE Kennedy collection is not appreciated by most collectors. 1. It's a modern issue - therefore I'm not interested 2. They made gadzillions of them, so another reason I'm not interested 3. I'll be able to get them in 10 or 20 years for pretty much the same price as now - so I'll keep looking for Morgans I have a complete collection of Kennedy 50 Cent pieces (P and D). Luckily I'm in my 40's and I can still lift the album. WHEN and IF I get the Proofs and the Silver Proofs, I think I'll have to have a great-great grandchild help me lift them out of their boxes. All kidding aside, there are rarities and the guys who are now collecting Lincolns to sell in 2009 and 2010 will be looking for other stuff in 2011. And the Kennedy half collection should keep them busy for quite some time. So all you Kennedy (and Ike) Freaks out there - quietly collect what you know is good. You will be rewarded (if financial gain is your thing). I hate to say it, but you can't avoid the financial gain angle anymore. The other day at work, I went to the cafeteria with a new guy. Afterwards, we were going to the pop machines to get something for the afternoon. I mentioned that I only had halves on me and couldn't buy any pop. The new guy kind of stuttered around and ACTUALLY offered me 60 cents for each half - sight unseen! Hey guys and girls, life is REALLY too short! |

Kennedy mintages are quite low for the 2000's decade. I think its a smart move to get those since most weren't released for circulation. Maybe the halves will be minted forever, I don't know. But with the increasing costs of metals how long can they keep producing these when they aren't even being used in circulation?

Don't think for a minute that the Mint loses any money on half dollars even though they don't circulate. The seniorage they collect on them is significant and the additional profit from collector sales sweetens the pot even more ($12.95 per roll and $30.95 per bag premiums) so they are still a money maker(pun intended ). Now if collector sales slow to a trickle and they can't get rid of them, that might change the situation but it is certainly sustainable with sales of a few million a year. |

I started collecting Kennedy half dollars in 1964. I have a complete set. Wish I had all the proofs also. |

Gary Burke - I agree. As I said in an earlier post, the number and WEIGHT of all the P and D coins is significant. Now add the proofs. And then for some STUPID reason, there are also the silver proofs.
How many hundred coins do we have to collect........
For me, I will collect the circulating pieces, but I will only get one of each of the proofs. I think this is just the US Mint trying to make a buck. Makes me sick.
Same goes for the Ikes. Blue Ikes. Brown Ikes. I just wanna p*k*.

My 1992-2001 run of Kennedy half dollars (P & D business strikes, clad and silver proofs; four per year) are probably the best stuck coins I own. Those two pages really shimmer! |

I just finished going through a bank box yesterday (incredible box, by the way; a 1995 Atlanta Basketball Commemorative, a 1976s proof (non-silver), 50 total silver, 35 40%, 15 90% including 2 Franklins, 3 Walkers, and a 1902-O Barber!!) and the box contained some real post 2001 gems; about 40 or so 2003 P and D, and 25 or so 2006 P and D. I didn't keep any of the post 2001 coins, I suppose that I should have! Already ordered four more boxes from the same source in the remote hope that lightning will strike twice!

Let's see the 2002 and later coins have mintages similar to the 1987 coins which were also not made for circulation. It has been twenty years since the 87's were made, and how much have they appreciated? An 87 mint set recntly sold at our coin club meeting for $6. Less than issue price. |

ive almost completed p & d Kennedy halves, I save everything made after 2001 its easy to find post 2001 dates now but id gather that in the near future the small mintage numbers will make them scarcer. As for now I can easily get any p or d kennedy date except for 70d. 2007's and 2008's arnt too easy to find yet though cause not enough fools have dumped them into circulation, give it a year or two though and you should be able to see them regulary as well. |
