I also started off using badthad's spreadsheet. Very nice and useful. I now I have multiple tabs and now its nothing like badthads :) I wont use pictures until I am finalized and happy with each coin in my set. One thing I do is add in the price I purchased the coin for. This helps me determine how much my set is worth or how much ive spent so far.

Small Change, try http://www.openoffice.org/index.html Free software and you can make your own spreadsheets up. GOod luck

Wow, glad to hear others are getting use out my hard work!

That's just one sheet tab in my workbook. I break most everything down like that. It's a lot of work, but worth it and it's FREE! LOL

jbak....is there a way on Pro-Coin to get the field to calculate how many of one coin and their aggregate value into one cell?

Currently, I've had to enter each coin (e.g. 1909 VDB) in separately rather than being able to say my inventory has X number of a coin and getting the software to calculate X times value of each coin = Z.

I'll second that! It is what I use at home, which is why I deliberately say "spreadsheet" and not "Excel" in my posts. There are versions for Windows, Linux, and both Mac types (Intel and PPC).

I too use Excel. Saw BadThads sheet but too late. I have been using my own for probably hundreds of years. Slight exageration. I really like Excel since I can transfer all info from one computer to another with out the necessity of entering a special program. I too don't like on line type programs since there are way to many hackers out there that could be accessing your info.
I now keep my spread sheets simple. I used to document purchase dates, purchase amounts, where purchased, any postage if through a postage necessity situation, present values, grades, etc. One spread sheet for each album, proof sets, uncirc sets, rolls of coins, in 2x2's, etc. I download this info on those little stick things for a USB port which someone so nicely put in the front of my comoputer. Eventually I said to myself, SELF, what are you doing? Who cares about all that stuff? I don't sell coins, so why the history.
I also print out each sheet. This becomes a book in itself.
So now I cut down to just an inventory based on denominations, dates, mints, grade and approximate value.
With over 100 Albums, Proof and Uncirc sets from back in the 50's, rolls and rolls of coins, boxes of 2x2's, I still end up with a book of information.
Getting old so might eventualy even drop the value column.

Because history is fun!

I understand what you are saying. With the hundreds of albums you have, it could become more of a chore than fun to document everything about every coin!

I use a spreadsheet with the following columns (I am going off of memory since I am at work):

Denomination (Cent, Nickel), Set (Indian Head, Lincoln), Date, Mintmark, Grade, TPG if applicable, Retail Value (taken from Coin Values), my cost, notes (such as small motto or full split bands), quantity, extended value, and location (whether I have it in a safe, safe deposit box, album, etc)

It's not perfect, but it has the info that I like to see.

Excel works fine but I bought Coin Manage. I could have spent hours setting up a template or $49 to have it done for me.

Glad to see a user of Coin Manage, Mike. I have it, too, but gave up using it when I couldn't figure out how to make a report. Will you help me? When I add a coin, sometimes I have multiples, such as maybe 33 dimes of a certain year. If I use print out a report, I can't figure out how to make it show me the extended price of the 33 times $.xx cost. It only shows me the cost of one. Does each coin have to be on a separate record or is there a way to see the extended value on a report?

I made my own spreadsheet with headings very much like CoinHunter. It works pretty well.

Bobbi,

I can take a look tonight see if I can remember how! I normally just log coins in or out and search.

On certified coins, I use the "My Collection" program at Heritage Galleries. It's free and actually gives you what I believe are better values over PCGS.

On raw coins, I don't really do anything with them other than putting them in holders or albums

Bobbi,

All of my coins are entered individually. I did try to add an ASE in a multiple of 2 and see if the database calculated it properly. It did not! So, I think you are right in that you won't get an accurate report if you log in (say) 10 Kennedy halves. Not a problem for me as 10 Kennedy halves of the same year means I have 9 to sell :) But, it may not be to your liking.

Thank you, Mike. I thought it probably would only do individual coins, as the likelihood of having identical multiples was probably not sufficient to fool around with another query calculation. I'm still trying to figure out just how I want to inventory what dear husband has and where to go from here. My homemade spread sheet works okay so far. The inaccuracies are only a result of the incorrectly input data.

I had the same issue from what my father left me. I used paper to start with. As I assimilated his collection, Coin Manage helped me enter it quickly and add photo's of those I really cared about. I'll bet advanced reporting is available. If I play with it and get some success, I'll let you know.

I have Coin Manage too. Not sure if you can do multiples - probably because you couldn't have pictures of each one of them. The other reason is that it's unlikely that 10 coins will be EXACTLY the same grade and have the same rim nicks and so on and so forth.

For expensive coins, this makes sense, but can be frustrating for the common stuff of recent years.
