@TheForce: You're correct, the nickels in the 1994 Jefferson C&C Set and the 1997 Botanic Garden C&C Set were not struck for circulation.

As long as you don't collect proof versions of Jefferson nickels in your set, it is easy to justify not including the C&C Set nickels in your collection. If you do include the NIFC proofs, however, I would think these matte finish pieces would fit right in!

Thanks commems for this great post. I remember reading about this several years ago and thinking I needed to get one, but somehow I forgot about it.

I would like both of those nickels but it's hard to justify the price.

I'm still on the fence about getting this nickel. I think I would consider a set complete w/o it and the '94 since they are not circulation strikes.
Not bad logic when you collect from circulation, but it is difficult for me to use that argument since I also collect the proofs.

The price is indeed high, but the market is the market...

This is still on my list to purchase. Too bad I started buying from the mint in '98...

I have been buying from the mint since 1982. I wish I could go back and tell myself I would regret not buying some of these specialty sets.

Even if I had started in '94 or '97 I don't think I would have gotten some of these specialty sets as my US-Mint-specific collecting scope was more focused... annual sets and ASEs for the most part. I didn't expand to other products (commemoratives, specialty sets, etc.) until the mid-2000's.

Exactly. Other than the 1982 Washington commemorative half dollars and three Prestige proof sets my mom got me while I was in college, I only bought the standard proof sets from the mint each year. The first crack was the 2009 Lincoln C&C, but 2013 is when I really started to take notice and started buying the other offerings.

I don't recall seeing a price like that. If I didn't have a set, I'd buy it.

But I just looked and found a couple that sold for under $113.00 shipped in completed items. They used to be a lot higher. Twice as much.
