The ugly ones are worth a lot more money.

Some of the most desirable CC Morgans come from the Redfield collection. They owe their distinctive appearance to a combination of storage in bad cardboard and exploded jars of peaches. Redfield was not particularly careful with his giant hoard.

Here's a example of what being shoveled down a coal chute, exposure to
peach juice and storage on high sulfur paperboard does to a coin's value. And this is a cheap one. Such ugliness is yours for only $1000.

I have to say as I troll around the net looking at different coins, to me the cleaned coins look better. Some of the older coins that haven't been cleaned are just darn ugly.

I can understand why one may think that shiny and bright may look better, but what actually happened is that the top layer of metal has been stripped from the coin. As such, they are considered damaged and worth considerably less.

Could you define "ugly?" Or maybe post a picture of a coin you deem ugly?

AU-Details, harshly cleaned/polished. Still probably worth a few hundred faults and all.

This looks to be an example of the OC-2 die variety. I noticed that there is a die crack through One D.

Here's the listing on ebay:http://www.ebay.com/itm/1846-Seated...AOSw0UdXsKn6

I messaged the seller and asked if it had been cleaned in the past. His response and I quote "In my opinion the coin has not been cleaned You will have 30 day return privilege if not 100 % satisfied It's a great coin for the money'

Yet he failed to mention the 10% restocking fee that 'may apply'. Westwood coins is the dealer that sued PCGS back in the day and was also one of the victims of the coin heist after that show in Florida. Well at least he has a history in the business. One might think that earns him some credibility.

Yes, the toning on that proof coin is ugly.

Are you wanting a Seated dollar that is a bright silver color, like a BU Morgan dollar? Good luck at finding an original one in the ~$1000 price range. All of them have been cleaned/dipped at one point. You may have to settle for one with nice gray toning.

Also, if that is what the dealer told you, then he is sleazy and should not be dealt with, period. Take your money elsewhere.

Sorry, I didn't doubt that the message was different. I should have said "considering that is what the dealer said".

$1195 is pretty aggressive pricing for what it is. If you want a nice Seated dollar, deal with a specialist like Brian Greer or Larry Briggs. Briggs deals in a lot of cleaned and damaged Seated dollars, but he won't hose you. Here's an 1843 XF+ for comparison.

@thq thank you for the referral. Just trolled his site and it's nice to find an honest dealer.

I've done more business with http://www.briangreerrarecoins.com (the source of most of my 1858-S quarters), both buying and selling. I've also bought from Briggs and got what I paid for, no more and no less. These guys wrote the books on Seated dimes and quarters. They know their stuff. They will buy damaged and polished because they have plenty of buyers who want the coin over the condition. They're the market and do not gouge.

Here's my Briggs 1870-CC belt buckle. The date has damage, and it was cheap:

I'm not all that into belt buckles. But if I was, I would have to say that is one bamf belt buckle. ;-)
